3rd Annual Convocation 2012

Hindustan University organised its 3rd Annual Convocation on 06 October 2012 for conferring Post Graduate and Under Graduate degrees on successful graduating students of its Engineering, Technology and Management programmes held at MGR Hall, University campus.

The Annual Convocation started with the traditional academic procession at 2:30 PM, followed by the invocation.

The convocation was declared open by Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, Hindustan University. The welcome address and report on Convocation 2012 was presented by the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. K. Sarukesi. A total of 1296 students had graduated in the academic year 2012 after having successfully passed the university examinations. Among the conferred degrees, 2 were Ph.D., 9 M.Phil. 450 PG and 773 UG across different disciplines.

Prof. K. V. Thomas, Honourable Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (Independent Charge), Govt. of India presided over as the Chief Guest on the occasion. In his convocation address, he said the purpose of education is to transform the individuals and the society and he considered education as an instrument of change. He mentioned that universalisation of education is required and there should be a path towards inter-disciplinary knowledge and skills. Towards the end of his speech he recalled his association with Dr. K. C. G. Verghese and mentioned his vision and realisation of imparting the quality and the best education to all.

The Degrees of Doctorate of Letters (Honoris Causa) was conferred upon the Guests of Honour Mr. M. Narendra, Chairman and Managing Director, Indian Overseas Bank and Ms. Mallika Srinivasan, Chairperson and CEO, Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited [TAFE] in person. They were given away by Prof K. V. Thomas, Honourable Minister & Chief Guest and Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Narendra, Guest of Honour (Honoris Causa) expressed his pleasure of having received the award of Doctorate of Letters and dedicated the same to the contributions of whole family of Indian Overseas Bank. He reposed faith in the education imparted to the students at Hindustan University and said that all have high hopes pinned on them towards contributing to society and nation as a whole. He said the role of faculty is also equally significant as that of the institution in shaping and making them socially responsible.

In her acceptance speech, Dr. Mallika Srinivasan, Guest of Honour (Honoris Causa), with all gratitude expressed and dedicated her achievement to the service for the society (farming). She congratulated Hindustan University and the top management for having followed the foot-prints of late Founder & Chairman Dr. K.C.G Verghese in realising the vision statement towards betterment of many. In her message to the graduating students she urged them to have positive attitude towards goal orientation, maintain the core values, follow the principle of life, perseverance towards excellence which are key factors of success.
32 students from different disciplines of Post Graduate programmes and 17 students from Under Graduate programmes conferred upon with medals and certificates for distinction of securing ranks. Dr. A. J. Stanley, Director-Academics, Hindustan University gave away the medals and certificates. All the students were awarded the certificates by the respective Deans. In all a total of 870 students received the degree certificates in-person and 426 students will receive in-absentia.

Guest Lecture on Solid State Drives

Department of EEE has organized for a guest lecture on “Solid State Drives’’ on 21st August 2012. The chief guest of the day was Mr. M. Sundarajan, Retired Engineer, Chennai Port Trust. The welcome address was given by Mr. S. Srinivasan, Assistant Professor, Department of EEE, HITS. The chief guest gave a comprehensive lecture on ‘Solid State Drives’’.

The guest lecture was mainly for the benefit of Final year EEE students. There were around 60 participants.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. S. Srinivasan, Assistant Professor, Department of EEE, HITS.

STiAE Report

Two students Mr. BRITTO PAUL LOUIS and Mr. C. MUKUND from the Department of Automobile Engineering were sent to Germany to attend the training program.  The training program started on July 2, 2012 and will continue till July 20, 2012. The program is being conducted by Steinbeis Transfer centre for Automotive Engineering Esslingen, at Esslingen University, Stuttgart, Germany.

 

The course includes the following topics:

• Vehicle technology.
• Power electronics and electric drives.
• Advanced internal combustion engine system.
• Transmission control.
• Automatic transmission and hybrid transmission.
• Fuel cell and other alternative car concepts.
• Why car structures fail?
• Two excursions days.
• Finally two examinations for the students.

The students have contacted the department and the faculty over phone and informed about the training and further information will be given after the students come back from Germany.

This project selected as one of the Best New Innovative Project by Birla Industrial and Technological Museum (BITM) functioning under National Council of Science Museums , Ministry of culture ,Govt of India and won Second Prize with a cash award of Rs 15000/- at the INNOVATION HUB INFOCOM 2011 – 12 Exhibition, Kolkata during 8th to 11th December,2011.


WALL CLIMBING ROBOT
Wall Climbing Robot works with SUCTION principle with four legged SUCTION CUPS.

The movement is enabled with VACUUM GENERATOR, PNEUMATIC PISTON ASSEMBLY and PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER.

The robots mainly consist of three parts: A vacuum pump, a suction mechanism and a driving mechanism. Basic conditions that the robots can adhere to and move reliably on a vertical surface are first established, then the suction cups with a rigidity formula for the vertical movement is obtained.

We have created a robot that can run up a wall as smooth as glass and onto the ceiling at a rate of six centimeters a second.

In addition the robot uses a high definition wireless camera to send images of the inspected element.

1. Cleaning of High-rise buildings
2. Inspection of cylindrical steel Nuclear Storage Tanks.

I was born in Tiruvanamalai district of Tamil Nadu. My father, M Jeychandren, who hails from a humble family from a hamlet near Thanjavur, toiled against the odds and cleared the Civil Services examination. My mother Chitra is a housewife. I was raised in Chennai in a middle class family.

After completing my 12^th standard, I was lucky to get into a premier institution – Hindustan College of Engineering and that too in the course of my choice- Mechanical Engineering. My time in Hindustan’s sprawling campus has left an indelible impression in my life. It was here that I learnt life’s most valuable lessons, faced my very first challenges, and found my lifelong buddies. Four years rolled on, and when I passed out in 2006, I was ready to face the world, ready to toil and succeed. Right out of college I had set my goal in aiming for the top civil services of the country. My father, who was an IRAS officer, has been my primary inspiration. Having grown up seeing my father and his colleagues living the bureaucratic life, I was determined to make it into the very same elite club. Though I was successful in my very first attempt and appeared for the final interview I had missed the final tally by a whisker. My parents and my younger sister Divya were a constant source of support and they encouraged me to never give up on my dreams. With unrelenting efforts, support from family and encouragement from my friends, I have been  successful in making it to IAS/IPS in the 2011 edition of the Civil Services examination. Tomorrow, when I embark on my Civil Service career after my ensuing training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Academy, Mussorie, I shall definitely carry the fond memories of my Hindustan days, knowledge and wisdom imparted to me by my professors and cherish them forever.

Design and Development of Three Wheeler For Physically Challenged

ABSTRACT
The project was taken up having the differently able (disability with legs) in mind–such a person can use this three-wheeler to make a living. The idea revolves around the concept of modifying the driver’s cabin of the auto rickshaw to accommodate a wheel chair, which can be held in place providing the comfort and the necessary safety to the driver. The controls are tailor made to make the fully operable by hands alone. Some of the specialized modification include incorporating a continuously varying transmission which relives the driver from the pain of constant gear shifting enabling him to do more with his hands, the brake is modified to be operated by hand in place of the clutch, a flip type door is employed for easy ingress and egress from the vehicle and a locking mechanism is provided for the wheel chair to enable utmost safety. The body of the standard vehicle are modified to have all such amenities- the dashboard, cabin floor region are fabricated specially for use in this vehicle.

The project taken up with all its features will be of great help to the differently able to live the independent lifestyle just like anybody else.

Design and Development Of All Terrain Vehicle (ATV)

ABSTRACT

This project is concerned with the design and fabrication of All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) as per BAJA SAEINDIA standards. Using CATIA V5, the model is created, which is fulfilling the guidelines of BAJA SAEINDIA rules. Infront SLA wishbone and rear McPherson Strut are fixed. The virtual model of ATV was converted into real time. A flange coupling was designed, modeled and fabricated to couple the gear box with the engine. The additional safety future of the vehicle is provision of transmitter and receiver that allows communication with team members on the track. The additional future of the vehicle is the insulation of the exhaust to retain the temperature with the exhaust system that is increases the overall efficiency of the engine. The weight of the vehicle is kept for a minimum of 280kg. This project won Rs. 40,000/- cash award in the BAJA SAEINDIA competition in less weight and sustainable category.

ABSTRACT
This project deals with airplane using battery power and solar energy as their source of energy for more than 24 hours of flight. Using solar panels, they collect sun's energy during the day for immediate use and store the remaining part for the night flight. Its major advantage lies in the fact that it is simple and versatile, which makes it applicable to a large range of airplanes of different wing spans. The design methodology is based on mass balances occurring during level flight. Finally, various additional possibilities to improve the endurance of a solar airplane are addressed.

The ability of an aircraft to fly during a much extended period of time has become a key issue for civilian aviation and UAVs application at high altitudes that require remaining airborne for a long period of time includes:

i. Communication platform for mobile devices
ii. Weather research and forecast
iii. Environmental monitoring

The target endurance is achieved with the help of a system composed of many subsystems that continuously exchange energy. Solar powered aircrafts are the solution to meat above requirements. The objective of the project is to study the feasibility of solar powered flight and to develop a fully functional prototype.

India’s 1st and World’s 14th Andro Humanoid with 32 DOF

Abstract
SAM is an Andro Humanoid Robot which uses Cascaded Computational Intelligence. SAM has 32 degrees of freedom. He is the first of his kind in India and 14th in the world.

SAM has legs but moves with the help of wheels and hence he can only move in a plane surface. SAM has 11 joints including the hip, neck, jaw, shoulders, elbow, wrist and finger. SAM can be controlled using voice commands and it is unbounded wireless control as he uses high speed internet for communication with the human master.

SAM V0.0 is not designed for a specific application, instead, he will be used as a model for developing the higher versions which will be integrated with more and more features. SAM can rotate his hip and neck and can speak due to the freedom of jaw movement. He uses right hand for giving shake hands, picking some objects, etc. He uses the left hand for shooting down a target.

SAM can be controlled by human master from round the world with the fulfillment of certain basic conditions. The main intention in the future works on SAM will be to develop an andro humanoid robot which will work in harmony with the human master.

Scientists of Tomorrow

Hindustan Innovation Factory an arm of Hindustan University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Department conducted an “in-camera” session on the innovations leading to societal benefits. The department, since its inception has been striving hard to bring out the best of talent, creativity and entrepreneurial skills of graduating students in mentoring them as “ SCIENTISTS OF TOMORROW “.

The exploration through research and scientific application has been the main academic pursuit the departments of Aero, Auto, ECE, EIE, Mech, MCA and IT under the guidance and supervision of highly qualified and most valued members of faculty. Hindustan University is putting in significant efforts to bring forth these innovations in channelizing them to the societal benefit.

In the introductory speech the Registrar emphasized that all innovations should either benefit society or industry. In an address by the Special Invitee, Mr. Dhorai Thodla mentioned idea is the child of innovation and that leads to a greater society by practical application. As a Mentor and Guide for many in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship, Mr. Dhorai said he always insists on resourcing for the materialization of the ideas with effective execution.

The Hindustan innovation factory is a platform for innovative ideas and creations. It focuses on helping up-coming inventors, idea generations, entrepreneurship and green technologies. The Hindustan innovation factory promotes entrepreneurship and student startups on campus. The e-cell as a part of the NEN on campus with the Hindustan innovation Factory gives students the guidance and mentor to help upcoming starters.

The Innovation factory conducted the press conference regarding the innovations by students from different departments. There was a session consisting of presentations which focused on the varied innovations brought out through the factory. Significant among them were a project on Robotics which is India’s first Andro humanoid Robot with 32 degrees of freedom. In another project group of final year UG students from Aero made a Solar Powered Glider which is significant in the current contest of rising fuel prices and power shortages. A final year student from the Department of MCA presented on Internet Security using Steganography attached to http protocol. The break-through innovation was a Three Wheeler Auto for Physically Challenged which was highly appreciated for the scope of livelihood to many who really need to get such support. A group of automobile students gave presentation on the developed ATV (All Terrain Vehicles) which was on the lines of BAJA, USA. Students from final year of UG & PG presented on the occasion.

Also present on the occasion were Ms. Vishnu Priya, Head – NEN, Chennai, Dr. K. Sarukesi, Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Pon Ramalingam, Registrar, Mr. Bruce D. Miller, Entrepreneurship Head and Mr. Venu Menon, Head – Innovation and Dy Director.

Hindustan University inks MOU with YILDIZ Technical University

Hindustan University inks MOU with YILDIZ Technical University, Turkey for a protocol on Educational and Scientific Cooperation

Hindustan University signed an MOU with YILDIZ Technical University, Istanbul, Republic of Turkey, to join in the protocol on educational and scientific cooperation.  This was signed by Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director of Hindustan University and Prof. Dr.Yusuf Avaz, the Vice-Rector of YILDIZ University, Turkey.

This enabled the two universities to cooperate in education, and research in areas of mutual interest.

The areas of cooperation extends over exchange of faculty and students, joint research activities, lectures, seminars, academic meetings, published academic material and other information with special short-term academic programmes.

The University campus is well equipped with smart classrooms and laboratory facilities.

Hindustan University joins hands with YILDIZ Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey.  An MoU was signed between Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director, ( can be seen in above photo second from left ) Hindustan Group of Institutions, and Prof. Dr.Yusuf Avaz, the Vice-Rector of YILDIZ University, Turkey on the occasion.   Director was supported by Dr. Pon Ramalingam, Registrar at the alliance ( can be seen above photo first from left ). 

Pre Event Press Conference - CAADRIA 2012

The 17th International Annual Conference of the Association for Computer Aided Architectural Design Research In Asia (CAADRIA) will be held from the 25th to the 28th April 2012, at Hindustan University, Padur campus.

A pre event press conference was held at Le Royal Meridien on the 20th April 2012 in commemoration with the 17th International CAADRIA conference to be hosted by Hindustan University. This international conference is held for the first time in South India and Hindustan University has the proud privilege to host this conference.

Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor of Hindustan University and Chairperson of the Hindustan Group of Institutions, Dr. K Sarukesi, Vice chancellor of Hindustan University, Ar. Andrew I-Kang Li President of CAADRIA and conference chair Mrs. Sheeba Chander CAADRIA 2012, and HOD of the School of Architecture, Hindustan University were the prominent members who formed the panel for the press conference.

The press meet commenced with an introduction by the Conference Chair Mrs. Sheeba Chander, who briefed us on the journey down the long road that began in Hong Kong where a student, R Balaji, of the School of Architecture had attended the 15th CAADRIA conference . He was also awarded the Young CAADRIA 2010 award. It was at the 15th CAADRIA conference that CAADRIA expressed keen interest in having Hindustan University as the host for the 17th Annual Conference and following this, a CAADRIA representative had come down to inspect the University and was impressed by the excellent infrastructure and the competent team comprising of a highly motivated management representatives with a bright vision qualified and experienced faculty and enthusiastic students. Amongst the shortlisted schools, Hindustan University was finally selected as the host for the 17Th Conference. She also highlighted the facilities and the achievements of the School Of Architecture and she also briefly explained about the 17th International Conference 2012 to be held at Hindustan University, which would be attended by international experts, practitioners and researchers from reputed organizations in the field of architecture.

The next to address the press was the President of CAADRIA, Mr. Andrew Li who enlightened us on the technical side of the CAADRIA conference. He said there would be 70 papers presented over the span of 4 days, at the 17th CAADRIA conference 2012 which will be held at Hindustan University. He briefed us on how these papers were selected. He called it a “quality assurance system” through a double blind review process by a panel of more than 50 experts. Every paper abstract is first reviewed by a committee and those selected are requested to submit the full paper which is again scrutinized and selectively chosen by experts in that particular field.

In her message to the press, Dr. Elizabeth Verghese announced that it is the proud privilege of the Hindustan University to host the 17th CAADRIA Conference 2012. She informed that the conference will be addressed by eminent speakers from India and abroad, this conference hosted by the university will provide an excellent platform for facilitating the promotion of knowledge about CAAD amongst Architectural schools researchers and practitioners. She was happy to introduce to the press the keynote speakers of the forthcoming international conference, Gautam Pennathur, Chairman , Faculty of Technology & Professor, Centre for Biotechnology, Anna University, Chennai, Hari Varma, Chief Creative Officer, Toonz Animation India Pvt. Ltd, Trivandrum India and Professor Mark Burry , Professor of Innovation (Spatial Information Architecture) RMIT University. She highlighted the fact that technology has revolutionized every endeavor and architecture is no exception. The highlight of this conference is that it is for the first time the CAADRIA conference is held in South India and Hindustan University has the proud privilege to host a reputed international conference. She also expressed her wish that School of Architecture, Hindustan University would conduct the 17th CAADRIA Conference 2012 in a successful manner.

Dr. K Sarukesi, Vice Chancellor, Hindustan University also addressed the press. He thanked CAADRIA for selecting Hindustan University to conduct this prestigious conference and congratulated the School Of Architecture for having taken up the challenge to conduct the international conference. He underlined the fact that the focus of this institution has grown from not just imparting knowledge but also to develop cutting edge research technology and industrial interaction. He was happy to note that 80-100 participants from abroad and from all over India are expected for this conference.

He also stated that CAADRIA 2012, is our 3rd international conference of the year 2012. The first was the Defence Education Conference conducted by Hindustan University in collaboration with Cranfield University. U.K. The 2nd was a seminar on Clean Energy and Nano-Convergence which was conducted by our Centre of Excellence, Hindustan University in association with Dongguk University, South Korea. He wished that the17th CAADRIA Conference 2012 would be a grand success.

11th April 2012, was an eventful day for Hindustan University loaded with several activities at different venues. Free Heart Check up camp organized by Y’s Men International Madras District , Placement activities and to top it all it was a great opportunity for the Languages Department of the School of Humanities to organized an interactive meeting with young talented author Harsh Snehanshu. The meeting was held at Good Shepherd Hall packed with enthusiastic audience constituting engineering students of our University with literary interest and staff from Languages Department.

The programme commenced with a Welcome Address by Dr. Usha Mahadevan, HOD. Languages Dept. She appreciated Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director for initiating this event and thanked Ms. Akkara Sherine , Asst. Prof. English , the coordinator of the programme. She introduced the Chief Guest Harsh Snehanshu an IITian and the author of the novel “Ooops! I fell in love” and “Ouch! That Hearts”.

Harsh Snehanshu shared his views about his accomplishment as an author and his keen interest in his pursuit and goal. He answered a flurry of questions raised by staff and students. They were awe struck at his intelligible and humorous ways of answering queries and it struck an instant harmonious chord with the entire audience.

The students also had a great chance to meet Mr. Rajeev Mahadevan, Assistant Systems Engineer at Tata Consultancy Services and curator of TEDx SRM. Students were eager to know more about TEDx and he briefed them about the same. He also encouraged the students to involve in the formation of TEDxHindustan.

Congratulations! Mr. Ashok Verghese , President of Hindustan Eagles Football Club

Hindustan Group of Institutions has bought Madras Eagles Football Club, a Chennai Football Association first division club and christened it as Hindustan Eagles Football Club. MoU was signed by Mr. Ashok Verghese and Madras Eagles FC Secretary, Mr. J.M Fernando .

Mr. Ashok Verghese , Director, HITS will be the President and Mr. J. M . Fernando will be Secretary of the Hindustan Eagles Football Club. Mr. Ashok Verghese said, “This initiative is our effort to promote the game in Chennai”. Mr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Pro-Chancellor & CEO, HGI stated that, “We want to build a strong team. Our long term aim is to get into the National League”. Mr. Abraham Verghese, Sports Advisor , HITS said ,” We want to progress step by step. I hope our initiative will encourage other colleges to get involved with football”.

Inauguration and blessings of the New Administration Block at Hindustan University

The programme commenced with prayers by Rev. Joby Thomas Samuel, Student , Chaplain , Hindustan University. Dr. K. Sarukesi , Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Pon. Ramalingam, Registrar, Dr. A. Joseph Stanley Director Academics, Prof. L. Jayachandran Controller of Examinations , HOD’s and Deans of all departments and few staff members were present on the occasion.

The Block was blessed by Rev. Joby Thomas Samuel, Chaplain and Dr. A. George, Dean Student Affairs offered the dedication prayer service. Hymns were rendered by the students’ choir and there was a lighting of the Kuthuvillaku. The keys of the COE Dept. and the Registrar’s office were blessed and handed over to MR. L. Jayachandran , COE and Dr. Pon Ramalingam, Registrar respectively.

Hindustan University partners with CII for CONNECT 2011

Hindustan University has partnered with CII for organizing CONNECT 2011 - The Eleventh Edition, India’s premier Information and Communication Technology Annual Conference and Exposition organized on 21st December 2011 at Chennai Convention Centre, Chennai. Asian Rowing Championship

The Association of School Rowing in Asia in Association with Hindustan University in “THE ROWING CENTER” Chennai from 28th to 31st July, 2010. The Inaugural Regatta was organized last year in Lake Rowing Club, Moratuwa, Srilanka. This year the competition was hosted by Hindustan University in the Rowing Center near Koovathur, ECR, Chennai.

Mr. RAKESHH M. of II year Aerospace Engineering, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, represented Tamil Nadu in the 31st National Junior Rowing Championship held at Hyderabad, December 2010. He took part both in Single Scull and Double Scull and emerged as Semi Finalist in both & ranked 6th in the country in Doubles.

Amphibious Tilt Rotor for Rescue Operations Subsonic Rotary Wing Project

Project Title : DESIGN OF A ROTOR COMBINED SUB-SONIC TILT ROTOR

How did we come to know about the contest?
While surfing the net, we found that NASA has been conducting a Tilt Rotor Design Competition 2009-2010 for students in high school level as well as college level in two levels namely

U. S Category
Non U. S Category

We noticed that the contest is mainly based on innovative and creative team work including a faculty advisor. Also found that only U. S Category Team Winners are eligible for cash price and internships at NASA. The rest all will receive trophies and certificates. After understanding the problem statement mentioned in the NASA Website, we decided to participate in the competition and discussed the contest with Prof. P. S. Venkatnarayanan and selected him as the faculty advisor for our design project.

Problem Description:
To design a tilt rotor for rescue operations while natural calamities like Tsunami, Hurricane and Forest Fires when roads, runways, railways, and harbors are damaged.

Design range: 800 nm


Capabilities

Take-off from water or ground; land on water or ground. Water includes lakes and oceans.
Carry up to 50 passengers
Siphon water into an internal tank and expel water while airborne operations

To submit a conceptual design for an amphibious tilt rotor that meets or exceeds the design goals and capabilities described above. Describe the technical issues associated with water landings and take-offs.

First Approach:

During the 6th and 7th semester of our Aeronautical Engineering programme, we had to work on the Aircraft Design Project (ADP 1 and 2). The experience gained in designing the project helped us to to proceed with the project in hand with ease.

We also spent days in library and had gone through several books mainly on Aerodynamics, Engines Propulsion etc, which helped us to understand the tilt rotor working principle. We collected materials regarding tilt rotor design and operation, and also got information through you tube videos.

Consultants:

We have discussed the problem statement with our faculty members Prof. P. S. Venkatnarayanan and Dr. P. K. Dash. They guided us whenever we required help.

Design Stage:

We were thinking on for months about tilt rotor, searched and collected all the information regarding the contest for about 3 months and preserved the data. Finally we prepared our report mainly containing

1. Design Phase In which we proposed the initial design objectives and briefly discussed the various design stages.

2. Airfoil Selection Selection of 6 digit NACA airfoil.

3. Wing, and Fuselage Selection

4. Flight Controls Use of elevons and discussed pitch, roll and yaw controls.

5. Float Actuation

6. Weight Estimation and Performance Calculations.

7. 3D Image and Design Image.

Includes hand drawings and design image created using CATIA software.

Vertical takeoff and landing.
A long time hovering is possible; thereby it can perform better rescue operations.
Belly itself acts as a float for landing and takeoff in water, also incorporated special floats which further helps in emergency.
Multi-mission is possible thereby can be used in Defense & Navy
High altitude and range compared to Helicopter.
Constructed using advanced composites thereby high reliability

Working of the design:
The tilt rotor we have designed consisting of three engines. Two engines are located at the wings acting as tilt rotors during operations and one engine at the front performs helicopter operation. While cruise the rear engines are tilted using hydraulic power like normal aircraft. During take-off, landing, and hovering all three engines are in vertical position in order to give lift.

How can it be useful for our country?
Man made or Natural Disaster Management

Natural calamities like,

Earthquake (E.g. : Gujarat)
Tsunami (South Indian Coasts)
Flash floods(E.g. : Kashmir)
Floods in North East Regions like Bihar, Orissa, Assam
Forest Fires etc.
Searching of fishermen in accident especially in Tamil NADU.

Man made disasters like,

Bhopal gas tragedy in Bhopal
Nuclear Radiation

Defense:

Army to work in mountain regions like Himalayas and North East Regions.

To carry troops in emergency condition like 26th December bomb blast.

Navy Operations:

Rescuing fishermen while at storms in oceans and border problems
Night Patrol
Coastal Security

Air Force Operations:

Mainly at hill stations to assist other forces.

Final Stage:

We designed the tilt rotor as per the rules of FAA, AIAA, and ICAO and prepared the design report and attached the necessary requirements regarding the team and faculty including the design image and send it to NASA.

Results:

Finally NASA has published the results of Tilt Rotor Design Competition 2009-2010 by 4th week of June in which they have mentioned that over hundreds of teams have participated in the contest and our team has secured the highest score in Non U. S Team Level. The results were published in the NASA Official Website and our Team has won the honors under Non U. S Category. Our team image, concepts image and abstract are published in NASA Website. Our team has received trophies and certificates from NASA also.

* We have also applied for patent right of our design.

Stalwartz Team of Hindustan University

The Team STALWARTZ comprising students of Automobile and Mechanical Departments of Hindustan University participated for the third time in JKTyre BAJA SAE India, a competition organized by SAE India (Society of Automotive Engineers) at the NATRAX facility of NATRIP in Pithampur, Indore, Madhya Pradesh in the last week of January. For this competition, the students have to fight all odds, to engineer and race the best off-road buggy with the engine sponsored by LOMBARDINI. The student engineered vehicles were judged by a panel of 60 judges comprising of Technocrats, CEOs, R&D Experts, Senior Automobile Engineers, Racers and Auto Journalists. More than 1500 students from 80 Institutions across India took part in the Event. After working hard for more than seven months in the Auto Laboratory, the students successfully fabricated an all wheel drive buggy with a self designed gearbox which gives the driver options for maximum torque and speed.The vehicle also gives an option to switch between two wheel drive and all wheel drive. 95 percent of the vehicle parts were fabricated in-house by the students themselves. The students of Hindustan University have successfully completed the 3 hour endurance run after clearing various static and dynamic tests for the first time. The icing of the Event was that at the HR Meet organized during the Event; two students of Hindustan University got placed in Mahindra & Mahindra on the spot.

Mudwreck - An All Terrain Vehicle by Stalwartz Team, HITS

A Team from Ten Sports and JK Tyres Company, Title Sponsors of SAE BAJA visited Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS) to take a video coverage of the Mudwreck (An All Terrain Vehicle developed by Team Stalwartz, comprising students of the School of Mechanical Sciences, HITS). Stalwartz being amongst the first teams in India to have their vehicle exhibited, this early grabbed the attention of the media – a privilege offered to only a select few.

As reported by the onlookers, the vehicle is said to be fastest than most other colleges and is better in terms of design and workmanship.

Mudwreck did a splendid job in front of the camera leaving them all dumbstruck. The technical inspector who inspected the functioning of the vehicle had nothing to complain about and was all praises for the achievement. The vehicle, Mudwreck is an accomplishment and a dream come true for Stalwartz Team of Hindustan, a proud, moment indeed! It appears that the Winner’s Trophy seems not too far from reach.

Releasing of First Tamil POP Album by University Students

"MUSIC + KADHAL" = MUDHAL, The First Tamil POP Album is produced and launching by our Hindustan University students team named "ILLUSION BAND". This POP Album will be releasing on 13th September 2010. The ILLUSION Band Members who have done this album are Mr. Cheran, Mr. Mohandoss, Mr. Arvind Raman, Mr. Kartik, Mr. Suseender, Ms. Aswathy.

HITS Football Team in upbeat mood as their player gets the Best Camper Award

The Second International Residential Football Camp in Chennai organized by PIFA (Premiership Indian Football Academy) was held at Nehru Stadium in Association with Premiere Indian Football Academy from 4th to 7th November, 2010. The camp was organized to spot out the Young Talents from India aged between 10-17 years. 35 players were selected for the camp. Five players from Hindustan University were privileged to clinch this golden opportunity.


First year students of various departments namely, Mr. Sathish Kumar, (Electronic and Instrumentation), Mr. Soma Sundaran and Mr. Janakiraman (Mechanical), Mr. Kenzong Galay & Mr. Leckdon (Civil) participated in the camp. They were given Intensive Training Programme by two International Football Coaches from United European Football Association. Mr. Mathew Elder from Everton Football Club and Mr. Nicholas Jones from Manchester United Club imparted strength training and football skills to the campers. Our University student, Mr. Kenzang Galay was presented the ‘‘Best Camper Award”.

Mechanical Sciences at the National Quiz Contest

About the Contest:

The Mahindra Auto Quotient is a National Level Auto Quiz Contest that is conducted annually by Mahindra. It was held for the first time in 2009. Mahindra Auto Quotient 2010, witnessed the participation of students from reputed institution from various parts of our country. Business Schools also entered into the fray as well.

Stages of the Contest:

The contests were conducted at three levels namely City, Regional and National Levels.

Level One: City Finals

The City Rounds were held in 16 cities across India. The Chennai City Rounds were held on 13th September 2010, at SRM Eswari College, Ramapuram. Around 50 – 60 teams from various city colleges participated. The first round was a written preliminary round. At the end of the round the top four teams were selected for the on-stage City finals of the top four teams, two were from Hindustan and one each from IIT Madras and MIT. Hindustan University Team scored 1000 points and won the City finals. Our University also won the second place as well. As the winner of the City Level, we progressed to the Regional Finals, where we would be battling against four other teams from the South Zone.

Level Two: Regional Finals

The South Zone Finals was held on 29th October 2010 in Mumbai. This round was between five teams: Hindustan University Team from Chennai, last year winners MSRIT Bangalore, Government Engineering College, Trivandrum, PSG Tech from Coimbatore and a team from IIM Bangalore. This quiz was tougher than the previous rounds, and it went all the way down to a tie-breaker between Hindustan University Team and GEC Trivandrum. Finally, it was our team that emerged as the winners of the Regional Finals, we progressed to the National Finals. We also received a cheque of Rs. 30000 as well.

Level Three: National Finals----Final Countdown

The National Finals were held on 31st October in Mumbai. This was between the winners of each of the Regional Finals. The finalists were:

South Zone : Hindustan University, Chennai

West Zone : Fr. Conceicao Rodrigues College of Engineering, Mumbai

East Zone : Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi

North Zone : BITS, Pilani

There were seven quiz rounds and it was a tough nut to crack. With initial hiccups, when our team couldn’t score a single point during the first two rounds, the team kept the spirit going though others had taken a good lead. Our University Team bounced back in the third round, and by the sixth round, we had 800 points. After the sixth round, two teams were eliminated. The seventh round was between Hindustan University and FMS Delhi. It was a rapid fire round, where one member from each team would face 10 questions in quick succession. Each question would add 100 points to our existing score. We managed to beat FMS in the final round, 1400 to 1000, to win the Auto Quotient 2010.

Final Results:

Hindustan University Team emerge winners of the Quiz Contest

Hindustan University Team was declared the overall winners and made it to the top. The team gets a free trip to Geneva, Switzerland, for the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011. The proud students of Hindustan University who achieved this exemplary feat are Mr. K. J. Jaichandran B.E. Automobile III year and Mr. M. Vijayendran, B.E. Mechanical III year.

The team who got the second prize gets a chance to make a trip to Dubai to experience the famous Dune Bashing, and the teams that got the third and fourth prize gets an opportunity to visit Jodhpur, to participate in the Mahindra Great Escape Rally.

Felicitation Ceremony for the Pro Chancellor Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese at Hindustan University

24th November 2011 was a memorable and joyous day as the fraternity of Hindustan Group of Institutions conglomerated at Hindustan University, to felicitate Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese for being conferred the Doctorate Degree in Business Administration by Dongguk University , South Korea.

The programme commenced with a Welcome Address by Dr. K. Sarukesi, Vice-Chancellor, Hindustan University. He accorded a warm welcome to the Chancellor , Dr. Elizabeth Verghese ,Pro Chancellor, Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Dr. Bhattacharya, Advisor to Chancellor, Prof. Robin, Legal Advisor, Mr. S. Suryanarayanan, Advisor , International Affairs, Directors- Dr. Aby Sam, Mr. Ashok Verghese, Ms. Annie Jacob,KC Tech, Dr. Susan Marthandan, HCAS, Principals of KCTech, HIET, NIMS, Deputy Director, OFS , staff and the guests present at the venue to witness the felicitation ceremony.He mentioned that it was a great pleasure to understand that Dongguk University recognized the contribution of Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese in the field of Aviation industry, innovation and his contribution to the society and conferred on him the Doctoral Degree.

He made a unique comparison stating that just as people in South Africa claimed that India gave Gandhi and in return gave back Mahatma Gandhi in the same way Hindustan University gave Mr. Anand Jacob Verghese to Dongguk Unviersity and in return gave back Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese acknowledging his deeds and conferred the doctoral degree . He also mentioned that Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese is the first international candidate to receive this honour from Dongguk University, South Korea.

Dr. R. Devanathan, Dean Electrical Sciences and CENCON expressed that it was his privilege to read out the congratulatory address given by Tae Won Kang, Dongguk University, Chairman of Research Competitiveness Committee. The address was given on 14th November 2011 at Dongguk University when the Doctoral Degree was conferred on Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese.

The highlight of the excerpts of the congratulatory address given on 14th November 2011 at Dongguk University is as follows:

“Dear President Hee Ok Kim , Vice-President Jung Keug Park , Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor of Hindustan University, Pro Chancellor Anand Jacob Verghese who is being honoured today with an honorary doctoral degree in Business Administration, and all other distinguished guests who are here today, it is a great honour to deliver a congratulatory address ……Among the various engineering departments in Hindustan University , its Aviation department is considered the top in India. For this year being the Silver Jubilee Anniversary for Hindustan University, I believe it’s very meaningful to award an honorary degree to Pro Chancellor Anand Jacob Verghese here at Dongguk University….My significant experience with Hindustan University came along when the University first established the Centre for Clean Energy and Nano Convergence(CENCON) after b enchmarking the QSRC here at Dongguk……I would like to congratulate Pro Chancellor Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese , the honorary doctoral recipient today, on becoming our graduate. We hope that the two Universities will be among the top hundred universities in the world, and moreover among the top ten universities in the near future…..”

Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor HITS in her Presidential Address was proud to state that she was overwhelmed to witness the occasion when Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese was conferred the Docotral Degree. She addressed Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese as the Distinguished Personality of the Day and also stated that he rightly deserved the conferment for his efficient administration and dynamic personality.

This was followed by felicitations and congratulatory messages from Dr. Aby Sam, Director, Mr. S. Suryanarayanan, Advisor , International Affairs, Dr. T. Rengaraja, Principal, KC Tech, Dr. V. J. Philip , Principal , HCAS, Mr. S. Surendra Babu, Principal , HIET, Dr. G. Srikanth, Director , NIMS, Mr. V. Govindaraj, Deputy Director, OFS, Dr. A. Joseph Stanley, Director Academics and Dr. A. George, Dean Student Affairs, Hindustan University.

Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese addressed the gathering on the occasion. He humbly stated that it was his privilege to address the audience during the felicitation ceremony. He mentioned that it is a golden opportunity to work with the University of South Korea and he found various possibilities and mutual areas of interest that both the universities can work in future. He stated that all the institutions under the Hindustan Group should make an iconic landmark and work with renewed energy and focus on its goal as the institution is heading to celebrate its Golden Jubilee in the year 2018.

Dr. Pon Ramalingam proposed the Vote of Thanks. The programme ended with the presentation of shawls and bouquets to Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese and also with a group photo session to mark the memorable occasion of merriment and rejoice.
