Hindustan University was the venue where a portal " Maiam" was introduced to the public


Hindustan University was the venue where a portal “ Maiam” was introduced to the public at a pre launch function by the celebrated actor Padmashri Dr. Kamal Haasan . Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director – Hindustan University was present at the function along with many eminent personalities drawn from different fields like literature, academics and the filmdom. Students from Hindustan University were also among the audience. While answering a volley of questions from the audience, Kamal clarified that the main launch of the portal would be a held at a later date and that it will be a major event.


The site showcases the plans Kamal wishes to implement. He said that this would open up a platform for likeminded individuals to share thoughts, and ideas and also to make literary contributions.


Discussing the various avenues where Maiam will extend its services , he said that it covers politics, cinema, art and literature, to name a few. Maiam will also take up humanitarian and social causes like blood donation and donation of organs.


A video conference was also held at the Founders Block, Hindustan University, where Dr. Kamal Haasan graciously answered all queries raised by the audience from different institutions including GRD College Coimbatore, Christ College Bangalore , Velammal High School-Mogappair an institution from Surapet and one from Madurai..

He added that Maiam also provides a stage for youngsters to voice their opinion.


It is available as a smart phone app in i-store and android market and soon would make its presence felt on facebook, twitter etc. It will connect people from multifarious areas including poets, writers, scholars, people from media and students. And the most significant point is that it is democratic in that it welcomes criticism and suggestions from all.

Valedictory Programme of the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of Hindustan University

The Valedictory Programme saw the culmination of an yearlong celebration of the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the Hindustan University.  The programme was presided over by the Chancellor, Dr. Elizabeth Verghese.  The Chief Guest for the occasion was the Hon’ble Minister of State for HRD, Govt. of India, Dr. D. Purandeswari and the Guest of Honour was the US Consul General, Consulate General of the USA, Ms. Jennifer Mc.Intyre. Also gracing the occasion were Proj. P. J. Kurien, Member of Parliament Rajya Sabha and Former Minister of State (Home Affairs) , Govt. of India, Mr. I. D. Swami. Felicitations on the occasion were delivered by Rev. Dr. Xavier Alphonse, Member, University Grants Commission, Mr. H. R. Mohan, Associate Vice President (Systems), The Hindu, Chennai and Former Principal, Hindustan College of Engineering, Dr. V. A. Eshwar.

The programme began with the rendering of the Hindustan Anthem which is a celebration of the lofty visions and ideals of a University as envisioned through the eyes of the late Founder Chairman Dr. K. C. G. Verghese. The anthem was composed by Ms Ujjaiyini Roy , Playback singer with the A. R. Rahman entourage and was directed by Brand Munni Consulting. The Vice-Chancellor , Dr. K. Sarukesi welcomed the august gathering and gave an overview of the achievements and milestones of the University from her status of   Hindustan College of Engineering to the current status – a period of 25 fruitful years. A video presentation on the universities’ journey over the past  25 years was screened for the audience.  In her presidential address, the Chancellor, HITS, spoke of the vision of the founder and thanked TEAM HINDUSTAN for all their efforts in bringing the university to the forefront in the arena of technical education.  She mentioned that 80% of graduates were coming out of private institutions which are increasingly playing a pivotal role in the educational landscape of the country however, she pointed out the private institutions are yet to receive their due recognition and share in terms of funding and visibility through government support. She appealed to the Hon’ble to look into this aspect and provide necessary support.

The Hon’ble Minister gave an enormous insight into the system of Higher Education and emphasized that the centre required the support of the State Government to act on issues like support to private institutions and rising the age of retirement. The Guest of Honour , Ms. Jennifer Mc.Inytre was quick to acknowledge that USA and India have enjoyed a long relationship and mentioned that there were multiple  ways to expand the bonds to enhance knowledge exchange and mutual understanding.  Prof. P. J. Kurien in his special address was happy to recollect his moments with the late founder whom he called his friend and a great visionary who converted possibilities into reality. He wished that Hindustan University would be not just one of the best but the best among the reputed institutions.  Mr. I. D. Swami , Former Minister of State(Home Affairs ), Govt. of India congratulated the Chancellor on her admirable work with the administration of the University and wished her the best for another fruitful 25 years ahead.

Hindustan Journal was released on the occasion. The journal was handed over to the Guest of Honour, Ms. Jennifer A Mclntyre by Dr. R. Devanathan , Chief Editor. The first copy was released and was received by Mr. Anand Jacob Verghese , Pro Chancellor, HITS. A Souvenir commemorating the 25 years of service to education by the institution was aptly released on the occasion. The copy was handed over to the Chief Guest, Dr. D. Purandeswari by Ms. Akkara Sherine, Editor . The souvenir was released by the Chief Guest and the first copy was received by Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor , Hindustan University.

Felicitations on the occasion were given by  Rev. Dr. Xavier Alphonse, Member, University Grants Commission, Mr. H. R. Mohan, Associate Vice President ( Systems), The Hindu, Chennai and Former Principal, Hindustan College of Engineering , Dr. V. A. Eswar.  The Director (Academic) proposed the vote of thanks and the programme came to a close to the tune of the National Anthem.

Motor Sports Quiz 2011

Hindustan University is in an upbeat mood as it is all set to celebrate the Valedictory Programme of the Silver Jubilee Celebrations. At this juncture the institution is even more thrilled to welcome the arrival of the first F1 Racing in India. Hindustan University is well known for encouraging and patronising sports for all the sports lovers in the city. Olympic Quiz was organised prior to the World Cup Football 2011. This is the second instance wherein this institution is hosting another quiz building up the enthusiasm among sports lovers. CHICANE 2011, a unique Motor Sports Quiz was organized on 22nd October 2011 at the Bay Range Campus, Hindustan University, Chennai was organised by the School of Mechanical Sciences and School of Sports and Games in association with the Hindustan Sports Foundation to welcome the arrival of F 1 Racing in India.

Mr. Armaan Ebrahim, touted as the most promising racing driver in India today, Formula LGB Champion in 2004 , Formula Racer- India was the Chief Guest. Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director, Hindustan University and President of the Hindustan Sports Foundation presided over the function.



About the Motor Sports Quiz:

94 teams took part in the preliminary rounds where 20 questions were asked by the Quiz Master Dr. Sumanth Raman. 6 teams were qualified for the final rounds. There were 6 rounds of questions which included buzzer round and visual round. There were numerous questions related to Formula race. The Team ‘Hungry and Roaring’ represented by Mr. G. Sundar and Mr. S. Govindarajan secured first place scoring 120 points. Team ‘ Rally to fame’ represented by Mr. Rupesh Krishnan and Mr. Pratik Khanna students of KCTech and Hindustan University secured second place with 105 points and Team ‘ Hindustan Riders’ represented by Mr. Venkateswaran and Mr. Bala Yogesh of Hindustan University clinched the third place scoring 70 points.

All the winning teams received prize money and premium tickets for F1 race to be held at New Delhi from the Chief Guest and Formula racer Armaan Ebrahim. He appreciated the efforts of Hindustan University and Sports Foundation for promoting various sports. He also expressed his happiness that this quiz was organised at the most appropriate time to boost up the youngsters and highlight the importance of the motor sports at a juncture when F 1 Racing enters the portals of our nation for the first time.

Mr. Ashok Verghese appreciated Mr. Armaan Ebrahim for gracing the occasion and he wished him many more success.

A seminar on Emerging Trends in Hospitality Management

As part of the Silver Jubilee Celebrations, the School of Management conducted a seminar on “Emerging Trends in Hospitality Management” on 22nd October 2011. Mr. P. Ramnath, Director, MBA, accorded a warm welcome to the Chief Guest and other distinguished guests. Dr. K. Sarukesi, Vice-Chancellor highlighted in his speech the importance of hospitality industry. Mr. Roger Brantsma, General Manager, Hilton, Chennai was the Chief Guest. In his address he gave basic tips to survive in the hospitality industry. He also spoke about the “brand loyalty”. He mentioned that “If you want to achieve certain things in this field you will have to stick to a brand”. In his Presidential Address, Dr. S. Bakthavatchalam, Joint Director, Tourism Department mentioned that an average GDP through tourism for a country is 10.6 to 11 percent and India hardly has 6 percent. He considered tourism and hospitality as the two eyes and concluded that “the sky is not the limit in tourism”.

Mr. Dhananjay Kumar , F&B Manager, Hilton, Chennai, spoke on the best practices in hotels. He mentioned that to have a very good organization we require organizational culture, core values and best practices. Three HR professionals namely, Col. K. C. Menon, Manager HR, ITC Grand Chola, Chennai; Mr. Padma Prasad, Manager, Learning and Development, Radisson , Blue Resorts ,Temple Bay, Mahabalipuram and Mr. Kamlesh Trivedi, Manager, Learning and Development, Vivanta –Fisherman’s Cove, Chennai spoke about the organization and their visions.

Mr. Manish Dayya, General Manager of Rain Tree Hotels, Chennai and Mr. Raghu Lanka, Director, National Sales and Marketing of Park Hotel, Chennai spoke about the differences between sales and marketing. They stated that marketing has a major role to play in hospitality industry and that they must keep up with the changing trends of the society.

Mr. Leo. J. Fernando,Director Operations, Asiana Hotel, Chennai, in his Valedictory Speech said that hospitality is a very good job generating industry and has the ability to provide jobs to around 50 million people.

Creative Modeling Contest

The Department of Civil Engineering conducted a Creative Modeling Contest as part of Silver Jubilee Valedictory Celebration of Hindustan University. The Contest was conducted for Civil Engineering and Architecture Department students on 13th October 2011. Students of the School of Architecture and Civil Engineering Department participated.

Mr. D. L .Mohan Doss, Managing Director, Shrishti Engineers and Consultants Chennai was the Chief Guest, Ms. Gita, Programme Officer , Dakshinchitra, Chennai was the Guest of Honour. The audience comprising staff and students listened to an inspiring speech by the guests. The students were at their creative best and they churned out impressive and innovative models based on Earth Quake Resistant Structures, Tsunami Resistant Structures, Suspension Bridges, Gravity Dams and High Rise Buildings. 11 groups participated in the competition and three groups emerged winners. The yardstick for selection was based on their originality , creativeness , perfection and principles.

Open House 2011


As part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations, with a vision “To Make Every Man A Success And No Man A Failure” Hindustan University, Chennai has opened up the doors of its beautiful and rich campus facilities to the aspiring youngsters of Chennai. Through this initiative, Hindustan University management has taken a proactive and promising step to provide real time experience about campus facilities to aspiring professionals of tomorrow. Hindustan University will hold the open house from 9 am on October 13, 2011 to 4.30 pm on October 14, 2011 to show its most sophisticated and advanced campus facilities, interesting engineering models and projects. Students across Chennai are welcome to this opportunity to experience what it takes to be a professional through Hindustan.

On October 13, 2011, the inaugural day, around 875 students from 8 schools in Chennai visited the campus to experience Hindustan University’s historical and fascinating array of facilities. The best student projects and amazing models made by Hindustan Students from each department were displayed for aspiring students to understand and learn and they were really astounded to see the creativity of Hindustan Students.

The open house features a journey through various departments/schools within the campus which includes Departments of Aeronautical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Architecture, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, courses offered, research labs, career prospects, lab facilities, Automobile, Aero& Mechanical workshops, highly specialized and sophisticated collection of Aero & Auto equipments, simulators, sports and other extracurricular facilities, hostels, Library, E-Labs, Computer Labs, Health Club and refreshment areas. Hindustan Staff will share facts and figures about what can be learned from these facilities, projects and models, how they were developed, preserved, and how they are being used today. They also offered tours of the facility and demonstrated how they prepare and mould students to become renowned professionals in the corporate world within and outside India. Various contests and entertainment activities were also organized and prizes were given away to visiting students.
