International Conference on Recent Trends in Renewable Energy Systems

As a part of Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the Hindustan University, the Department of Mechanical Engineering, organized an International Conference from 17th to 18th , March 2011.



In spite of Scientific Development and IT revaluation today, the very survival of the human community and the balancing of Eco-system are being continuously kept under threat due to global warming, climate change, zone depletion etc., and so it was felt important to propagate the message of "Green and Clean Energy" for the 21st century through this conference and hence the topic "Recent Trends in Renewable Energy System"

Aims & Objectives of the Conference:

• Explore the barriers for Implementing Renewable Energy (RE) Technologies like Solar, Wind, Bio-mass etc.,
• Expedite the installations of RE Systems in corporate & Power sectors
• Provide a forum for tapping the hidden potential in clean Energy
• Identify the Researches around the world for innovation in RE

Technical Partner

'ENFUSE' - Energy and Fuel Users Association of India is a pioneering body comprising of technical experts in the field of Energy including Renewables. ENFUSE played the role of Technical Partner for the conference by deputing expert speakers to share their expertise and to deliberate on various issues.

Participants:

The participants of the conference were of four categories:
1. The industrial experts who shared their rich expertise in the field of Solar, Wind Energy, Bio Fuels, Ocean etc.,
2.The academic researchers who presented their finding in the RE field.
3. The implementing stake - holders from industries of Wind Energy and Solar Energy
4.The young audience of UG & PG courses.

In total, there were nearly 600 Participants for the two days conference.

Inauguration:

The conference was inaugurated by Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, Hindustan University. She stressed the importance of Renewable Energy. Dr. Robert Franke from Solar Valley Project, Germany was the Chief Guest. He made the key-note address detailing the Solar Valley Project in Germany and elaborated on Photo-voltaic cells. Shri V. Subramaniam, Former Secretary of Ministry of New & Renewable Energy to Govt. of India, New Delhi, presented the Indian Scenario of RE. Mr. S. Ramalingam, National President, ENFUSE delivered a special inaugural lecture on Nation Mission on Energy Enhancement.

Technical Sessions

After the formal Inauguration on 17/03/2011, Technical Sessions by Industrial experts (Annexure - I) from the field of Solar, Wind, Ocean, Bio etc., and the Paper presentation by academic researches were organized. researcher, PG, UG Students.

QUIZ & Panel Discussion:

In order to make the student participants involve in the technical sessions, a Technical Quiz and a Panel discussion on Renewable Energy were organized on the second day.

No of Academic Participants:

More than 100 research papers were received for presentation in the conference. However, only 50 papers were selected for presentation and other authors were allowed to participate in the conference.

Proceedings:

The whole outcome of the conference is brought out in proceedings with inclusion of all Research Papers and the expert speeches. The power point material used for lectures is made into a CD and supplied to all external participants along with the proceedings

The Management of Hindustan University was highly magnanimous to support the conference with full financial grant. Some of the Industrial and Commercial establishments also came forward to extent financial support by means of advertisement, Banner Display, Stalls, Sponsoring Participants etc., The Notable Industrial Sponsors are 1. Green Peace Construction Private Limited, Chennai. 2. Gamesa Wind turbine Ltd., 3. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy

Miscellaneous:

The Message of Green and Clean Energy is still being propagated by the students of Mechanical Engineering of Hindustan University as they all wear T-shirts with a slogan "GO GREEN" Printed on their T.Shirts

Conclusion:

Through this International Conference , the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering was successful in dealing with all areas of Renewable Energy like Solar, Wind, Ocean, Bio etc., and the Department has planned further action towards implementation of RE System in the Campus of Hindustan University as well as the communities around apart from taking up RE Projects in Collaboration with RE Industries

POWWOW 2011- Symposium 0f School Of Management Studies by Hindustan University

The School of Management Studies, Hindustan University (one of the best Chennai Engineering Colleges) organised a one day National Level Management Meet “POWWOW 2011” on 19th March 2011 at Hindustan University campus. POWWOW 2011 created an extraordinary platform for the Budding Managers from various B-Schools to showcase their managerial skills and an opportunity to challenge the best.

Mr. Gautam Maitra, Managing Director & Regional Vice President – APAC, FLSmidth Minerals- India presided over the inaugural session of the meet. He emphasised how Management students need to be dynamic in the current economic scenario. The meet offered the following managerial activities

Rural Marketing
This is an event which reveals the individual's marketing capability to the sell the product to the rural market.

The preliminary round was judged by Mr. Tony Joseph and the final round by Mr. Saravanan. S, HR manager – Asiana Group of Hotels

The first prize was won by ITM Business School

Best Manager
Business is a simple game if you have good people with the right frame of mind. This event has the various rounds to bring out the managerial abilities and the best attitudes of the individual. It includes group discussions, case studies, stress interview and panel interviews.

The event witnessed various rounds which includes Group Discussion, Case Study and Stress interviews.

All the round was adjudged by Mr. Kalyanasundram , IAS officer ( retd) 1984 batch

The Best manager prize was won by MOP Vaishnav College

Business Plan

The business plan competition is the platform for the students to identify and showcase entrepreneurial talent .The competition challenges the students who are interested to startup their new ventures and to take ideas to the market.

The final round was judged by Mr. Karthick . S, Alumnus, Director – De Varisty club , Salem. The first prize was won by ITM and the second prize by NIMS
ADZAP

This event is to bring out the personal selling abilities among the future managers.

The rounds were adjudged by Ms. Ramya and Ms. Magaikarisi, Professor English Divison, DG Vaishnav College

The first prize was won by ITM and the second prize by University of Madras

Bid your way

Simulation action model based upon IPL auction bid. The MBA students of Hindustan University created the simulation software for the bid.

It’s a simulation exercise of IPL Bid . The MBA students of HITS created the software.

The first prize was won by Bharthidasan University and second prize was won by ITM Business School

The overall championship was won by ITM B – School.

Mr. Latha Krishnaswamy, Director – Krishnaswamy Associates presided over the Valedictory Session and distributed the prizes

Unni Menon’s Live Musical Concert @ HITS (One of the best Chennai Engineering Colleges)

On 29th March 2011, Unni Menon’s Live Music Concert rocked Hindustan University (one of the best Chennai Engineering Colleges) . Unni Menon is a South Indian film playback singer. He has sung over 3000 songs in South Indian languages like Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. In 2002 , he got the Best Male Playback Singer, for the (Song: Enge Antha Vennila) from the film Varushamellam Vasantham and (Songs: Ennai thalatum and Yaarindha Devathai) from the movie Unnai Ninaithu. In the year 1996 he got the Best Male Playback Singer for the (Song: Ooh lalala) from the hit movie, ‘Minsara Kanavu’.

Unni Menon’s musical troupe comprised four singers and a strong band of talented musicians. The Management, staff and students of Hindustan Group of Institutions (one of the best Chennai Engineering Colleges) enjoyed the musical evening that went on for three hours. Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, Hindustan University (one of the best Chennai Engineering Colleges) presented mementos to Mr. Unni Menon and his musical troupe. The latter mentioned that he was happy to perform in this institution; he also stated that his son is an alumnus of this institution.

The hall was packed with enthusiastic and lively audience waiting to enjoy the concert after their hectic day’s schedule at the University. It was time to relax and enjoy the music. The concert kicked off with an introduction of Mr. Unni Menon and this was followed by a semi classical opening song, “ Sangeethame Amara Sallapame”. The concert was a treat as it was a mixture of semi-classical and peppy numbers in Malayalam, Hindi and Tamil. The young singers belonging to the Unni Menon’s musical troupe came up with the latest Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam songs encouraging the students to go wild with the music. There was a solo performance by each of the musicians enthralling the crowd with their prowess over the instrument. The predominant texture as the melody created by Unni Menon’s rendition of melodious songs was echoed by various other instruments, the concert reached a crescendo as lots were happening off-stage. The students and staff were at their dancing best moving to the rhythm of music and songs by Unni Menon and his co-singers.

The great finale to the musical concert was the rendition of the much awaited song from the film , ‘Minsara Kanavu’, Ooh lalala….the audience were not seated anymore . Hindustan University (one of the best Chennai Engineering Colleges) for the first time in its history witnessed staff and students having a rocking time at this fabulous Unni Menon’s Live Music Concert.

Blood Donation Camp - Kcg College of Technology

NSS and YRC Units of KCG College of Technology (one of the best Chennai Engineering Colleges) , Karapakkam, Chennai Organized Blood Donation Camp in association with Y’s Men Club of Mylapore and Lions Club of Golden Bharath on March 04, 2011 in the College Campus. 232 units of Blood were Collected from the Student and Staff of the College.
