Two - Day National Seminar on Recent Trends in Unmanned Air Vehicles

Courtesy: Chennai Engineering Colleges

Unmanned air vehicles commonly referred to as UAVs are defined as Powered Air Vehicles sustained in flight by aerodynamic lift over most of their flight path and guided without an onboard crew. They may be expendable or recoverable and can fly autonomously or piloted remotely. Historically the greatest uses of UAVs have been in the areas of intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance.

As UAVs play an increasingly important role in the above-mentioned mission areas and it has seen an exponential growth in the last decade. It is no doubt that there is a need for having a seminar that would benefit the students and academicians to orient their research activities related to UAVs. It would help to strengthen the bridge between academicians and industry enabling the development of state of the art systems in the future.

As ADE, Bangalore is the only DRDO lab in India, dedicated to design and development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), the School of Aeronautical Engineering, HITS , in association with ADE organized a Two-Day National Seminar on Recent Trends in UAVs from 25th to 26th February, 2011. It attracted many participants from the host department of our institute and other institutes from all over Tamil Nadu.

The seminar was organized and coordinated by Dr. S. Senthil Kumar, Associate Professor and Mr. D. Vijayakumar, Assistant Professor, School of Aeronautical Engineering, HITS. The seminar was inaugurated by Shri. K. V. Srinivasan, Scientist- G, Emeritus Scientist, ADE, Bangalore on 25th of February, 2011 in the presence of Dr. K. Sarukesi, Vice-Chancellor, HITS, Dr. E. Rajakuperan, Dean, School of Aeronautical Engineering, HITS, Shri. S. Rajagopal, Scientist-E and Shri. M. Suresh, Scientist-D, ADE, Bangalore.

Dr. E. Rajakuperan, Dean, School of Aeronautical Engineering, HITS welcomed the dignitaries. Inaugurating the Conference, the Chief Guest, Shri. K. V. Srinivasan, Scientist- G delivered a keynote address on “Unmanned Aerial Vehicles-Defining Tomorrows Battlefield”. Dr. K. Sarukesi, Vice-Chancellor, HITS presided over the function, discussed upon the importance of collaborative research between HITS and Defence organizations like ADE and up-gradations of curriculum with UAVs related courses. The theme of the seminar was presented by Shri. S. Rajagopal, Scientist-E, ADE, Bangalore. Prof. R. Asokan, HOD, School of Aeronautical Engineering proposed the Vote of Thanks.

The seminar focused on recent trends in UAVs. Topics included aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, guidance and control and navigations of UAVs. The seminar was divided into six sessions and each topic was explained and discussed in a separate session with a real time case study of UAVs designed by ADE, Bangalore. This gave the participants more insight into the real time design concepts and recent technology advancements of UAVs.

More than one hundred participants including 25 delegates of other academic institutions from various parts of Tamil Nadu attended and benefited from the series of lectures given by Shri. S. Rajagopal, Scientist-E and Shri. M. Suresh, Scientist-D, ADE, Bangalore.

Technology advancements in these areas will enable India to play a major role in the development of UAVs. To achieve this, there is a need for Industry-Institution collaboration. On the second day, a closed door discussion was also organized to initiate and strengthen the industry-Institute collaboration. During the closed door discussion, further areas of research need are also discussed for possible collaborations with ADE. These include the need for continued improvement of flapping wing mechanism, composite material usages, self healing technology of composites and aero-acoustics. During the Valedictory Function, certificates were issued to all the participants.
