Cencon Lecture Series

Lecture 1:

”Energy – Present and Future from Material Science point of View ’’ a lecture was conducted by Prof. Rajeev Ahuja , Department of Physics and Material Science Condensed Matter Theory, Uppasala University, Sweden on 02 nd August 2011, 11 a.m at HITS. He gave a lecture on Computational Material Science and density functional theory. He discussed on clean form of Energy – Hydrogen Oxygen Fuel cell and Solid form of hydrogen storage methods using Nano tubes. He also explained about Lead acid batteries and Li- ion batteries. He emphasized Hydrogen as a future form of energy source.

Lecture 2:

“Nanotechnology for Information Technology application (Energy Harvesting)” by Prof. Taewon Kang, Quantum Functional Semiconductor Research Centre, Dongguk University, Korea on 03 rd August 2011, 11 a.m was held at HITS. He gave lecture on Printable electronic devices, cloth solar cells and Low cost Radio frequency identification (RFID) tag.

These distinguished lectures were conducted for the benefit of CENCON Research staff and all M.Tech students both from HITS and KCG Tech. There were around 100 participants in each of the seminar.

The welcome address was given by Dr. R. Devananthan, Dean (ES and CENCON), HITS. Dr. K. Sarukesi, Vice Chancellor and Dr. A. Joseph Stanley, Director (Academic) attended the function.

Oracle WDP Training Group

Oracle OCA online exam was conducted on 19.07.11 at Hindustan University successfully for the seventh time. Twenty six students appeared for the exam and twenty two students passed. A Proctor from Oracle University conducted the exam. Oracle University appreciated the efforts taken by the Faculty Incharge for the smooth conduct of the exam and for the good pass percentage (i.e.Pass percentage is 85%)

Congratulations students for your achievements in Oracle Online Examination.

Anti- Ragging Campaign 2011 at HITS

The Anti-Ragging Campaign 2011 began at 9.30 a. m on 11th August 2011 at Hindustan University with a prayer. Dr. K .Sarukesi, Vice-Chancellor, HITS welcomed the Chief Guest Dr. C. Sylendra Babu I.P.S , Inspector General of Police, North Zone, Tamil Nadu and also the entire Hindustan fraternity. He also welcomed the students of neighbouring institutions who arrived to participate in the Campaign against ragging.

Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor , HITS in her Presidential Address started with a query to the senior students , “How will you receive your juniors?”. She advised the students that , “Ragging is an easy prescription for trouble”. She also added that the first lesson to be learnt is how to treat your fellow beings. She was very firm in stating that every student should respect each other and the institution should continue to remain as ragging free campus. She concluded her address stating that students should concentrate on their goals and achieve laurels in their fields and not indulge in ragging and other acts.

Prof. C. Robin , Legal Advisor, HGI and District Governor, Madras District, Y’s Men International was the Guest of Honour. In his address he said , “ Ragging is a colonial phenomenon and is a menace” UN has viewed ragging as a human rights violation. The Government has taken several legal measures to curb ragging. He informed that law alone is not enough to curb this menace. He spoke from the view point of Legal Advisor and also as a Y’s Men. He informed that Y’s Men International aims to develop the minds of the youngsters. He advised that the youth should involve in various social activities and organize programmes in the institution and involve in focusing their energy towards healthy activities that would promote their holistic development.

Dr. C. Sylendra Babu, was the Chief Guest during the Anti-Ragging Campaign 2011 at Hindustan University addressed the students with enthusiasm. He informed that he was extremely happy to be present for the Anti –Ragging Campaign 2011 and he applauded the institution for taking the initiative and he also mentioned that Hindustan University is the first institution to conduct an Anti-Ragging Campaign as an initiative to curb ragging. He informed the students that he had only one message to the students“ You’re fortunate”. He meant that the students are fortunate to be in a reputed engineering institution and there are many who don’t get an opportunity to enter the portals of good engineering institution. He advised the students to have positive attitude and have larger ambitions in life. His prime advise was to utilise the time as it is precious he also explained that one hour can be equated to one crore. He also gave a lecture through a power point presentation on the meaning of ragging and also gave a brief account of the laws constituted to prohibit ragging in the state. He ended his speech motivating the students to concentrate on education. He said , “Make full use of your education and develop the required skills and knowledge and have a positive outlook in life”.

Mr. Jesse Boyd introduced his team of 11 coaches who are imparting rigorous coaching in basketball , football, hockey, tennis and athletics to the university students.

Prizes were distributed by the Chief Guest, Dr. C. Sylendra Babu to the winners of various competitions as part of the Anti-Ragging Campaign 2011. Essay and slogan writing competitions based on the theme evils of ragging were conducted.

It was followed by a Anti-Campaign Rally that was flagged off by Dr. C. Sylendra Babu, I. P. S. Inspector General of Police, North Chennai. The rally witnessed the participation of the staff and students of the Hindustan Group of Institutions and neigbouring engineering. The participants were sporting a well designed T-Shirt with the letters printed Say No To Ragging. The staff and students were vociferous during the rally voicing the evils of ragging.

Basic Counselling Skills for Teachers

A training programme on counseling was conducted by professional counsellors from 19th to 26th July 2011 . 150 staff members of Hindustan University participated in this programme. The primary objective of this programme was to strengthen the counseling activities on campus.

Clinical psychologists from “College for Psycho Social Rehabilitation”, Richmond Fellowship India (RFSI), a NGO based in Bangalore, were the resource faculty members who conducted the training program. The program was slotted between 19th July 2011 and 26th July 2011 (6 days) in 3 batches of 2 days each (50 staff per batch).

Day 1:
The training program commenced with a group activity aimed at identifying the challenges faced by the students - need for counselling, with reference to the common problems observed among the adolescents. With this understanding about potential problems, the participants were given an orientation on how to identify the students who might need help in the form of counseling and the various stages at which the counseling is required. This was followed by group activities so as to understand the role of the counsellor. There was also a module wherein the participants were made aware of the closed ended and open ended questions and their impact during counseling sessions. The importance of active listening in counselling was very effectively delivered through the group activity.

Day 2:
It commenced with a feedback from the faculty on the proceedings of the Day 1 of the workshop. The first session was about the counselling procedures and methods that need to be followed. This was followed by a self awareness exercise involving all the participants. The afternoon session started with the case study evaluation followed by the role play. A session on ethical code of conduct for counselors was also conducted.

Feedback on the workshop was obtained from the staff members after the culmination of the six days training program. It concluded with the Valedictory Address by Dr. K. Sarukesi, Vice-Chancellor, HITS.

International Anti Drug Day Rally

International Anti Drug Day rally was organized by Narcotics Intelligence Bureau - Criminal Investigation Department (NIB-CID) , Tamil Nadu Police, on 26th June 2011 against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking, titled “Think Health and Not Drugs”. NCC, NSS, Red Cross youth wing members of Hindustan University and staff members took part in the rally. The objective of the rally was to create awareness among the youth regarding the evils of drug addiction. The rally kicked off from Grand Trunk Road, Chennai and concluded at NIB- CID Chennai office in GST Road. The senior officials of NIB-CID Mr Rajendran, IPS & Mrs D Vijayakumari, IPS, interacted with the staff members and discussed about the current day scenario related to drug addiction and the necessity of creating awareness programmes for the students. The officials of NIB- CID have assured to extend their support in organizing such programmes at Hindustan University (Chennai Engineering Colleges).

Winners of the State Level Karate Championship

Karate champion Mr. E Gnanasundaram , Lecturer, Hindustan University (Chennai Engineering Colleges) has participated in many World Karate Championships. The Indian spearhead in Common Wealth Games who now trains the Hindustan University Karate Team has proved the supremacy of his team in several national tournaments.

Atulya Ashokan (Aero 7A), posted her win with a Gold in the Black belt category and M Jayachandran(Aero 5A) clinched a bronze in the junior boys category in the State Level Karate championship held at the J J Stadium, Kilpauk on 10th July 2011.

Hindustan University wins World Education Awards

The World Education Awards have been instituted with the aim of felicitating and acknowledging unique and innovative initiatives in the field of education globally. The e World Education Summit 2011 was held at New Delhi between 13th and 15th July 2011 and the prestigious awards were presented on the 14th July 2011. The summit was jointly organized by the Centre for Science, Development and Media Studies (CSDMS) and Elets Technomedia Private Ltd.

Nominations were invited from schools, higher education institutions, vocational training institutions, government organizations, non-governmental organizations, private institutions and enterprises across the globe engaged in the field of education.

Workshop on Energy Conservation and Energy Audit

Department of EEE, Hindustan University (Chennai Engineering Colleges) conducted workshop on ‘’Energy Conservation and Energy Audit’’ on 19th July 2011. The workshop was conducted for the benefit of final year EEE, M.E (PED) & M.E (AE) students. There were around 100 participants.

World Environment Day Celebrations

World Environment Day was celebrated on 7th July, 2011 at Hindustan University. Dr.Angeline Prabhavathy, HOD (Civil) welcomed the gathering. Prof. Dr. Joseph Stanley, Director (Academics) delivered the Inaugural address highlighting the importance of World Environment Day.

Er. Dr. S. Sundaramoorthy, FRSPH (London), MACS (USA), Former Engineering Director, CMWSSB and Mentor, Creative Environmental Consultants, Chennai was the Chief Guest. In his keynote address on “Innovations in Wastewater Treatment”, he highlighted the development of R.O process and its applications. He said World Environment Day should be treated as a day to preserve the Environmental resources, viz., Air, Water and Land.

Dr. R. A. Ramanujam, Dy. Director, CLRI, Chennai, spoke on “Current Scenario in Municipal and Industrial solid Waste Management”. He gave emphasis on the importance of collection, transport and disposal methods of solid wastes.

Dr. B. V. S. Gurunatha Rao, Advisor, Elevated Bus Way Ltd., Chennai gave a speech on “Indian Scenario on Environmental Pollution Control”. He stressed the importance of Pollution control for safer environment.

Prof.V.Subbiah, Dept. of Civil Engineering, proposed the Vote of Thanks.

The Chief Guest and other dignitaries along with Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director and Dr. Angeline Prabhavathy, HOD, Civil, Hindustan University participated in planting of saplings. India is the host country for this year’s World Environment Day and Forest is the theme. Planting of saplings marked the Environment Day Celebrations at Hindustan University.

Accenture Career Day

Accenture Career Day (ACD) was organized by the Department of Placement at Hindustan University on 15 July 2011. ACD is a campus initiative of Accenture designed to edify the students about Accenture and calling with it. The final year engineering and MBA students had the opportunity to find out building a career at Accenture, Accenture’s Delivery Centers for Technology in India, Accenture Global Careers Program, Training and higher Education Programs. The students also had an opportunity to interact with the alumni working at Accenture.
