HGI Celebrates XMas

Hindustan University staged their Christmas celebrations with grandeur on 16th December 2011. Hindustan Group of Institutions comprising Hindustan University, Hindustan Institution of Engineering and Technology, KCG College of Technology, Hindustan College of Arts and Science, Orient Flight School, National Institution of Management Studies got together to celebrate the festive season and spread the message of Christmas. Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chairperson, HGI, Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Pro-Chancellor, Hindustan University, Dr. K. Sarukesi, Vice-Chancellor, Mr. Ashok Verghese , Director, Ms. Annie Jacob , Director, KCTECH, Dr. Susan Marthandan, Director, HCAS and other members of the Management, staff and students of HGI were present on the occasion.

The week long celebration was embedded with Choral Competitions and Biblia Quiz opened to the neighboring institutions that included schools, colleges and churches. This was a unique and first attempt by an institution to spread the Message of Christ in the right spirit of brethren among the fellow being and spread the message of love during the festive season.

The grand finale of the Xmas celebration was held at Hindustan University. The stage was decorated with X’Mas tree and well painted backdrop. The programme commenced with a prayer by Rev. Joby Thomas, Chaplain HGI. There was an invocation song “Joy to the world” by the student choir HITS.

Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Varghese, Chairperson, HGI in her welcome address stated that X’mas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and the divine spirit should prevail during the celebration with prime thought that , “Jesus is the reason for the season”. She congratulated the staff and students for celebrating X’mas in the true spirit she also mentioned that it was the first time in the city that an institution is conducting X’mas celebration . She applauded the efforts of Prof. Wilfred Chelliah (Hindustan University) who was instrumental in conducting Choral Competition 2011, for all the schools and colleges in Chennai. She also welcomed the Guests, S,.W. Chandrasekhar, Former Principal, Hindustan Bible Institute, Chennai and Rev. Dr. Prakash K. George, Chaplain, Gurukul Lutheran Theological College, Chennai.. She concluded her speech with a message that Jesus came down to the earth to save humanity so that men may achieve salvation. X’mas is the time of sharing caring and also spreading love to brethren.

There was a congregational carol, “O Come all ye faithful” by the student choir HITS, the first Bible Lesson was read by Miss Annie Jacob Varghese, Director KC Tech. Student and staff HCAS rendered devotional hymns rejoicing the birth of Christ.

Dr Susan Marthandan, Director HCAS, read the verses from the Holy Scripture. This was followed by the rendition of carols by staff and students of Hindustan University that created a divine presence in the auditorium. There was an enlightening choreography performance by students of HCAS. Verses from the Holy Scripture was read by Dr. Dolly Varghese, Professor English, Hindustan University.

The rendition of carols by the Hindustan Group of Institution was melodious praising the birth of Christ. S.W Chandrasekran, Former Principal of Hindustan Bible Institution of Chennai (CG), said that purpose of celebration of X’mas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus. He appreciated the message of the Chairperson, “Jesus is the reason, for this season”. He mentioned that the Beauty of the scripture(Isiah-1-7) is that Isaiah the prophet said that humanity will ask this question “God where do you live?” God lives in every human being on the earth. In his message he said that God is willing to come into man and bear all the evils and elevate the human life.

Mementos were presented to the guests by the Chancellor. Wilfred Chelliah, Professor English,( Hindustan University) Choir Conductor, mentioned that the Founder Chairman Dr KCG Varghese had the desire to conduct a choir competition and it was fulfilled by the Chancellor, Dr. Mrs Elizabeth Verghese. He also gave a brief report about the Choral Competition held at Hindustan University. Objective of the Choral Competition was to raise the level of interest in music, among young people. He noticed that they are interested in formal music. The competition was a platform to consolidate the potential of singers. There were three categories (schools, colleges and church) and they took part in the choral competition 2011, at HITS.

There was a special rendering of carols by the winners of the Christmas Choral competition 2011, held at Hindustan University, the audience was mesmerized and the hall was filled with festive spirit of X’mas. The school students of MCC campus sang with true spirit of X’mas joy and four year old Lydion, left the audience spell bound with his drum performance. Women Christian College, the winners in the college category performed on the stage during the X’mas celebration in Hindustan. This was followed by the CSI St. Georges Cathedral youth fellowship, winners in the church category sang “Glory in the highest” in addition to the choral competition. Biblia quiz competition (inter collegiate) was held for staff and students of the 7 institutions of the HGI, this was held on 14th December 2011.

Christmas message

Rev. Dr. Prakash, K. George and Chaplain, Gurukul Lutheran Theological College, Chennai spread the message of Christmas. He said,”Every festival is a time to strengthen our relationship. X’mas is a time we come together and share the spirit of joy and sharing. HGI have shown to us how to celebrate X’mas by bringing several colleges and schools and churches to celebrate X’mas”. He said that the Message of God is with us. Lord is Emmanuel. That is the message. Experience God within our midst.

The challenge of X’mas is through celebrating the presence of human beings around us that’s how we experience the presence of God. A feeling of brethren among us is the greatest message of X’mas festive season.

Day 1

The first of a kind choral competition hosted by Hindustan University was inaugurated by the Chancellor , Hindustan University. The first day of the preliminary round saw the enthusiastic participation of around 17 schools despite the on-going examinations. The stage was set ablaze with the breathtaking performances of the children all adorned in colorful costumes with props that added a festive value to their performances. In her inaugural address, the Chancellor, Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, was elated to see such an exposition of talent and spirit that was so characteristic of the festive season. She wished all the children the very best for their performances and was glad to be a part of a very refreshing day.

The choral competition was judged by some of the most distinguished iconic personalities in the realm of choral singing – Mrs. Martha Howie and Mrs. Sharada Shaffter along with the convenor of the competition – Prof. Winfred Chelliah, Choir Master , HITS.

Day 2

This was the day to showcase the talents of the College students who brought in a higher degree of technicality into their singing along with ingenuity in terms of innovative compilations of the existing Christmas tradition numbers. Once again, the judges forum comprised of Mrs. Martha Howie and Mrs. Sharada Shaffter along with the convenor of the competition – Prof. Winfred Chelliah, Choir Master , HITS who gave their feedback on all performances.

Day 3

Day 3 brought together most of the renowned choirs in the city on a common platform showcasing both traditional and innovative styles of rendering traditional Christmas numbers. Around 10 churches pitted their talents on this platform in an effort to book a place in the finals in the church category. The judges ,Mrs. Martha Howie and Mrs. Sharada

Shaffter along with the convenor of the competition – Prof. Winfred Chelliah, Choir Master , HITS gave their feedback on all performances.

During the forenoon session of 16 Dec’ 2011 three teams from each category – schools, colleges and churches would battle it out for the top spot in their respective categories. The first prize winning team in each category will render their prize winning performances in the Christmas celebrations of the Hindustan Group of Institutions(HGI) scheduled to take off at 2:00pm on the 16th Dec’ 2011 in the MGR Hall. The Carol Service of HGI will feature performances from the faculty and students of all HGI institutions in addition to the prize winning choirs of the “Carol The King Choral Competition -2011”.

Among the first private professional colleges to be established in Tamil Nadu by higher education visionary the late Dr. K.C.G. Verghese (1940-2006), the Hindustan Group of Institutions (HGI), comprising six colleges in Chennai and Pondicherry, has been dispensing high quality engineering, aviation, applied sciences and business management education for over four decades. In July, the Hindustan College of Engineering (HCE estb. 1985) will complete its first year as the Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS) — a deemed (autonomous) university. Enthused by the academic and administrative freedom conferred upon HITS by the Delhi-based University Grants Commission, Ashok Verghese, joint director of HGI, foresees exciting new growth opportunities for HITS, which offers engineering and aeronautical degree programmes and boasts 6,500 enroled students instructed by 300 faculty.

“We plan to develop a centre of excellence in composites for aerospace applications in HITS and introduce new courses in mechatronics, motorsports engineering and chemical and robotic engineering,” says Verghese, a mechanical engineering graduate of Anna University with an MBA from Michigan University, USA, who manages HGI, which has an aggregate enrolment of 13,000 students and 1,000 faculty.

Following conferment of deemed university status on HITS, building advanced research capability has moved to the top of the agenda for Verghese, who is engineering a collaborative research nexus between the university and industry, while simultaneously deputing faculty to study at research institutes abroad.

Among the first research-driven initiatives is a deputation of electronics faculty to the John Abbot College in Montreal, Canada for an intensive six-month course on photonics. “The purpose of the intellectual exchange programme is to enable our faculty to study research cultures abroad, develop R&D capability and persuade the Central and state governments to fund research projects at HITS in collaboration with industry,” says Verghese.

Even as its management continues to sign agreements with foreign universities for joint research in aviation, automobile and mechanical engineering studies; for student and faculty exchange programmes and IT courses through videoconferencing, HITS is developing an international outlook as well. Every year the Hindustan Group offers scholarships for undergraduate studies to five students from Africa and other countries who excel in sports and games, and ten students from foreign universities who have excelled in cultural activities including jazz, rock, and dance, for further studies in its institutions.

“We want our students to learn from experts in different fields and develop their skills. Our future plans are to attract more international participation in our sports and cultural activities, draw the best faculty from India and overseas and pursue advanced research programmes funded by the Indian government and industry,” says Verghese.

Seminar on Defence Education for the 21st century - HITS & Cranfield University,Defence Academy of the UK

The first talk was by Prof Ian Wallace, Head of School, CranfieldDefence and Security. He stressed on the different defence- oriented programmes at Cranfield. He said a large number of countries, including those in the developing world, come to Cranfield for defence education. In addition, programmes on cyber security and technology management are offered in the defence academy. An overview of the different programmes at Cranfieldand the changing methodology was presented by him.

In the second talk, Mr. Rajeev Sawhney from Boeing India at Bangalore, spoke about defence experimentation and the large offset funds available to take up work in the area of defence education. He also mentioned about the simulations being done in the area. Dr. Prahalada, Vice Chancellor, Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, Pune followed up this talk and discussed about the defence education with specific reference to the soldier and strength to the forces. He talked of the different wars and the motivation provided to the soldier. He said that his institute was better placed as all the DRDO labs in the country were directly accessible to him.

Dr. Manik Mukherjee, Director, Fast, DRDO Delhi provided a glimpse of the warfare over the last several years and the changing scenario. This talk was followed by a discussion on technology enhanced learning by Dr. VenkatSastry of Cranfielduniversity. The e-assessment and the novel work of assessment, driving learning in an e-learning process,were brought out by him. Thereafter, a brief presentation was made on the current drivers for defence education by Dr. S. Sunderrajan, Director, National Institute of Technology, Trichy. He pointed out to the large amount of research work that could be done by academic institutes using the offset funds.

The scaling of blast waves and the damage that they could cause was discussed by Professor Ramamurthi of Hindustan University on the second day of the seminar. This talk was followed by a lecture by Mr. B. V. Ramanamurthy of CAE India describing the simulators that they have for flight simulation and tank simulation. The application for Navy using computer modeling and other technologies was also presented by his colleague. Thereafter a detailed description of the technologies which are involved in the making of a tank was dealt with by Dr. P. Sivakumar, Director, Combat Vehicle and Research Establishment, Avadi, Chennai. He showed movies of the tanks in operation in the different terrains and also addressed the future developments in the area.

Subsequently, Professor Ian Wallace provided an interesting scenario of a fast-changing world with pollution, population growth and other aspects in the last several years and said these changes have an impact on defence and security. This lecture was followed by a presentation on defence experimentation in a virtual internal security environment by Mr. ManojTyagi of Bharat Electronics, Bangalore. He also spoke of the well-organized courses at the CranfieldDefence Academy.

Felicitation Ceremony for the Pro Chancellor Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese at Hindustan University

24th November 2011 was a memorable and joyous day as the fraternity of Hindustan Group of Institutions conglomerated at Hindustan University, to felicitate Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese for being conferred the Doctorate Degree in Business Administration by Dongguk University , South Korea.

The programme commenced with a Welcome Address by Dr. K. Sarukesi, Vice-Chancellor, Hindustan University. He accorded a warm welcome to the Chancellor , Dr. Elizabeth Verghese ,Pro Chancellor, Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Dr. Bhattacharya, Advisor to Chancellor, Prof. Robin, Legal Advisor, Mr. S. Suryanarayanan, Advisor , International Affairs, Directors- Dr. Aby Sam, Mr. Ashok Verghese, Ms. Annie Jacob,KC Tech, Dr. Susan Marthandan, HCAS, Principals of KCTech, HIET, NIMS, Deputy Director, OFS , staff and the guests present at the venue to witness the felicitation ceremony.He mentioned that it was a great pleasure to understand that Dongguk University recognized the contribution of Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese in the field of Aviation industry, innovation and his contribution to the society and conferred on him the Doctoral Degree.

He made a unique comparison stating that just as people in South Africa claimed that India gave Gandhi and in return gave back Mahatma Gandhi in the same way Hindustan University gave Mr. Anand Jacob Verghese to Dongguk Unviersity and in return gave back Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese acknowledging his deeds and conferred the doctoral degree . He also mentioned that Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese is the first international candidate to receive this honour from Dongguk University, South Korea.

Dr. R. Devanathan, Dean Electrical Sciences and CENCON expressed that it was his privilege to read out the congratulatory address given by Tae Won Kang, Dongguk University, Chairman of Research Competitiveness Committee. The address was given on 14th November 2011 at Dongguk University when the Doctoral Degree was conferred on Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese.

The highlight of the excerpts of the congratulatory address given on 14th November 2011 at Dongguk University is as follows:

“Dear President Hee Ok Kim , Vice-President Jung Keug Park , Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor of Hindustan University, Pro Chancellor Anand Jacob Verghese who is being honoured today with an honorary doctoral degree in Business Administration, and all other distinguished guests who are here today, it is a great honour to deliver a congratulatory address ……Among the various engineering departments in Hindustan University , its Aviation department is considered the top in India. For this year being the Silver Jubilee Anniversary for Hindustan University, I believe it’s very meaningful to award an honorary degree to Pro Chancellor Anand Jacob Verghese here at Dongguk University….My significant experience with Hindustan University came along when the University first established the Centre for Clean Energy and Nano Convergence(CENCON) after b enchmarking the QSRC here at Dongguk……I would like to congratulate Pro Chancellor Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese , the honorary doctoral recipient today, on becoming our graduate. We hope that the two Universities will be among the top hundred universities in the world, and moreover among the top ten universities in the near future…..”

Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor HITS in her Presidential Address was proud to state that she was overwhelmed to witness the occasion when Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese was conferred the Docotral Degree. She addressed Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese as the Distinguished Personality of the Day and also stated that he rightly deserved the conferment for his efficient administration and dynamic personality.

This was followed by felicitations and congratulatory messages from Dr. Aby Sam, Director, Mr. S. Suryanarayanan, Advisor , International Affairs, Dr. T. Rengaraja, Principal, KC Tech, Dr. V. J. Philip , Principal , HCAS, Mr. S. Surendra Babu, Principal , HIET, Dr. G. Srikanth, Director , NIMS, Mr. V. Govindaraj, Deputy Director, OFS, Dr. A. Joseph Stanley, Director Academics and Dr. A. George, Dean Student Affairs, Hindustan University.

Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese addressed the gathering on the occasion. He humbly stated that it was his privilege to address the audience during the felicitation ceremony. He mentioned that it is a golden opportunity to work with the University of South Korea and he found various possibilities and mutual areas of interest that both the universities can work in future. He stated that all the institutions under the Hindustan Group should make an iconic landmark and work with renewed energy and focus on its goal as the institution is heading to celebrate its Golden Jubilee in the year 2018.

Dr. Pon Ramalingam proposed the Vote of Thanks. The programme ended with the presentation of shawls and bouquets to Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese and also with a group photo session to mark the memorable occasion of merriment and rejoice.

Global Leadership and POSCO Innovation

The School of International Affairs, Hindustan University organized a Guest Lecture on 23rd November 2011. The lecture was attended by the students of MBA and EIBIS course of Hindustan University.

The programme commenced with a prayer song. The Guests and the students were accorded a warm welcome. Ms. Akkara Sherine, Academic Co-ordinator of the English Language, Indian Business for International Students (EIBIS) Course introduced the Chief Guest, Mr. Song Byeong Kwan, Director, POSCO, Chennai. Ms. Sukhee Lee of Indo Korea Cultural and Information Centre was instrumental in arranging the Guest Lecture for the students. Mr. Bruce, Dean International Affairs, Mr. Venu Menon, Deputy Director Placement, Dr. Ramnath, Director, Management Studies and staff members of MBA and EIBIS Course were present on the occasion.

Mr. Song Byeong Kwan, Director, POSCO gave a lecture titled “Global Leadership and POSCO Innovation”. His lecture was divided into two sessions and it was interspersed with creative video presentations. He commenced his lecture with interesting facts regarding the similarity of Korean and Tamil languages. Inge vaa (Tamil) and Ile va (Korean) means the same in English “Come here”. In his lecture he emphasized the importance of culture and he stated that deep understanding of other culture is the only way to know the country as a whole. He emphasized that the key to Global Leadership is constant moving. He mentioned that human beings must learn a lot from animals too, how to confront the environment and how to move on in life. He also added that we must learn from history and learn from leading companies to excel. He elaborated on the fact that to move on in life aim for perfection, face challenges and concentrate to work as a team. Life is about overcoming the previous habit and giving way to new habits. He stated “Endurance is Achievement”. One should have passion in the work and have the feel “Me and We” are one and work as a team, move in Groups with experienced leaders. Move towards vision and target. He explained that the resources may be limited but creativity is unlimited.

There was an excellent video presentation that highlighted the growth of POSCO , the world’s largest steel company which started in 1973 at Korea achieved the unique status as the Top 3 steel firm with 8 hubs , 80 subsidiaries and 80 sales network. In India POSCO has established its firms in Delhi, Maharashtra, Orissa and Chennai. Mr. Son Byeong Kwan highlighted on the fact that POSCO’s history is the history of creativity and thus it has achieved its current status and it moves on to achieve greater heights as a family with a vision to excel. He concluded the lecture stating that to excel in all fields one should get a good insight of the world and confront the environment do the best and not to miss out on anything.
