India’s 1st and World’s 14th Andro humanoid

Creation of SAM the Andro Humanoid was a dream of Mr. Shyam. R. Nair of EIE department that come true for him. Fourteen months of dedicated and sincere work at the lab established in his residence, helped him to accomplish this project. The concept of inventing an Andro humanoid was embedded in his mind as a result of a particular incident that happened in North India 2 years ago. The incident shocked the nation and it exposed the lack of use of technology and the stark reality of the dangers engulfed around the soldiers of our soil. He recalls the incident wherein the soldiers were on a mission to encounter the terrorists who were in a hide-out. The Indian army battalion based on the information went on amission to ambush the terrorists, but unfortunately they lost their lives due to a bomb blast planted by the terrorists. Unfortunately this was a trap for the Indian army that shook the whole nation.

Mr. Shyam was depressed that our heroes shouldn’t have attained such a fate, when there is so much of advancement in technology such casualties and accidents shouldn’t occur in future. Thus this incident inspired him to do something for the nation to help our soldiers who guard the nation against the terrorists. It pepped up his innate talents and encouraged him to think out of the box to use his technical knowledge and contribute for the nation to save our soldiers.


He started developing the protocol which integrates computational intelligence with human intelligence and named it as “Cascaded Computational Intelligence”. At the initial stages he created a humanoid and then developed a robot model for executing the protocol and finally decided to create the Andro humanoid.

Once he finished the work of andro humanoid, he then decided to publish it in paper. He ended up with 10 international publications of which 6 are journals and 4 are conference papers.

Thereafter he came to know from various reliable sources that his Andro humanoid was the first of its kind in India and 14th in the world.

Features of SAM:
SAM V0.0 is an Andro Humanoid with 32 DOF (Degrees Of Freedom).
He can move in a plain surface using wheels.
He can be controlled by voice commands.
He has unbounded wireless control that make him controlled by me round the world. For example, if SAM is in America and I am at Chennai, I can control him by my voice commands through internet.
He can be used as an Astronaut, in Defense, emergency rescue operation etc in future.

HITS Dept. of Research on Seminars (July through August)

Topic: Difference in Research Culture in India and U.K


The Department of Research, Hindustan University, organized a Seminar on “Difference in Research Culture in India and U.K” on 20.07.2012 (Friday) 9.30 A.M at K.S.Moorthy Seminar Hall. The seminar was attended by research scholars, Deans, HODs and Research supervisors. Dr.D.G.Roychowdhury, Dean (Research) welcomed the participants. The Inaugural Address was given by by Dr.G.  Ilavazhagan, Director Research (Funded and Sponsored). He spoke on the need for research and the varied fields where research can be carried out. He later introduced the guest speaker of the day Dr.P.Shanmugam, Principal Scientist, Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Adyar. Dr.Shanmugam delivered an enlightening speech on the research culture existing in India and focused on areas for improvement. He also emphasized the planning and execution of a smart PhD. After the presentation there was an interactive session wherein the participants clarified their queries. The seminar ended with the vote of thanks by Dr.A.Anitha, Research Coordinator, and HITS.

The Department of Research, Hindustan University, organized a Seminar on “Occupational Safety and Health in Research Labs and Shop Floors” on 03.08.2012 (Friday) 9.30A.M at K.S.Moorthy Seminar Hall. The Inaugural Address and Introduction of Guest Speaker, Dr.M.Surianarayanan, Cell for Industrial Safety and Risk Analysis, CLRI was given by Dr.G. Ilavazhagan, Director Research (Funded and Sponsored), HITS. Dr.M.Surianarayanans presentation focused on the importance and safety measures that one has to follow while doing experiments. He also supported his views by slideshows of real life accidents. Queries raised by the participants were clarified by the speaker. At the end Dr.D.G. Roy Chowdhury, Dean Research concluded the seminar with vote of thanks.

The Department of Research, Hindustan University, organized a Seminar on “How to be an effective researcher” on 10.08.201 (Friday) 9.30 A.M at K.S.Moorthy Seminar Hall. Inaugural Address was given by Dr.G. Ilavazhagan, Director Research (Funded and Sponsored), HITS. He later introduced the Guest Speaker Dr.R.R.Krishnamurthy, Professor, Department of Applied Geology, and University of Madras. Dr.Krishnamurthy emphasized the need for developing skills and confidence in communication, time management, planning, problem solving, leadership and assertiveness. The seminar ended with vote of thanks by Dr.P.Raghavan, Research Co-coordinator, and HITS.

This project selected as one of the Best New Innovative Project by Birla Industrial and Technological Museum (BITM) functioning under National Council of Science Museums , Ministry of culture ,Govt of India and won Second Prize with a cash award of Rs 15000/- at the INNOVATION HUB INFOCOM 2011 – 12 Exhibition, Kolkata during 8th to 11th December,2011.


WALL CLIMBING ROBOT
Wall Climbing Robot works with SUCTION principle with four legged SUCTION CUPS.

The movement is enabled with VACUUM GENERATOR, PNEUMATIC PISTON ASSEMBLY and PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER.

The robots mainly consist of three parts: A vacuum pump, a suction mechanism and a driving mechanism. Basic conditions that the robots can adhere to and move reliably on a vertical surface are first established, then the suction cups with a rigidity formula for the vertical movement is obtained.

We have created a robot that can run up a wall as smooth as glass and onto the ceiling at a rate of six centimeters a second.

In addition the robot uses a high definition wireless camera to send images of the inspected element.

1. Cleaning of High-rise buildings
2. Inspection of cylindrical steel Nuclear Storage Tanks.

ABSTRACT:
HTTP does not secure its requests and responses. Using Man-in-the-Middle attack, it is possible to alter the HTTP communication, while it still would look authentic. This can be a problem, if you download data such as PGP key, TOR client, access banking services on-line, or when there is an interest to filter what you can read on the Internet. It should be noted that under particular circumstances, it is possible to attack HTTPS secured communication successfully. This paper proposes a steganography scheme that can be used to provide security at the Network Layer.

Design and Development of Three Wheeler For Physically Challenged

ABSTRACT
The project was taken up having the differently able (disability with legs) in mind–such a person can use this three-wheeler to make a living. The idea revolves around the concept of modifying the driver’s cabin of the auto rickshaw to accommodate a wheel chair, which can be held in place providing the comfort and the necessary safety to the driver. The controls are tailor made to make the fully operable by hands alone. Some of the specialized modification include incorporating a continuously varying transmission which relives the driver from the pain of constant gear shifting enabling him to do more with his hands, the brake is modified to be operated by hand in place of the clutch, a flip type door is employed for easy ingress and egress from the vehicle and a locking mechanism is provided for the wheel chair to enable utmost safety. The body of the standard vehicle are modified to have all such amenities- the dashboard, cabin floor region are fabricated specially for use in this vehicle.

The project taken up with all its features will be of great help to the differently able to live the independent lifestyle just like anybody else.

ABSTRACT

This project is concerned with the design and fabrication of All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) as per BAJA SAEINDIA standards. Using CATIA V5, the model is created, which is fulfilling the guidelines of BAJA SAEINDIA rules. Infront SLA wishbone and rear McPherson Strut are fixed. The virtual model of ATV was converted into real time. A flange coupling was designed, modeled and fabricated to couple the gear box with the engine. The additional safety future of the vehicle is provision of transmitter and receiver that allows communication with team members on the track. The additional future of the vehicle is the insulation of the exhaust to retain the temperature with the exhaust system that is increases the overall efficiency of the engine. The weight of the vehicle is kept for a minimum of 280kg. This project won Rs. 40,000/- cash award in the BAJA SAEINDIA competition in less weight and sustainable category.

ABSTRACT
This project deals with airplane using battery power and solar energy as their source of energy for more than 24 hours of flight. Using solar panels, they collect sun's energy during the day for immediate use and store the remaining part for the night flight. Its major advantage lies in the fact that it is simple and versatile, which makes it applicable to a large range of airplanes of different wing spans. The design methodology is based on mass balances occurring during level flight. Finally, various additional possibilities to improve the endurance of a solar airplane are addressed.

The ability of an aircraft to fly during a much extended period of time has become a key issue for civilian aviation and UAVs application at high altitudes that require remaining airborne for a long period of time includes:

i. Communication platform for mobile devices
ii. Weather research and forecast
iii. Environmental monitoring

The target endurance is achieved with the help of a system composed of many subsystems that continuously exchange energy. Solar powered aircrafts are the solution to meat above requirements. The objective of the project is to study the feasibility of solar powered flight and to develop a fully functional prototype.

Abstract
SAM is an Andro Humanoid Robot which uses Cascaded Computational Intelligence. SAM has 32 degrees of freedom. He is the first of his kind in India and 14th in the world.

SAM has legs but moves with the help of wheels and hence he can only move in a plane surface. SAM has 11 joints including the hip, neck, jaw, shoulders, elbow, wrist and finger. SAM can be controlled using voice commands and it is unbounded wireless control as he uses high speed internet for communication with the human master.

SAM V0.0 is not designed for a specific application, instead, he will be used as a model for developing the higher versions which will be integrated with more and more features. SAM can rotate his hip and neck and can speak due to the freedom of jaw movement. He uses right hand for giving shake hands, picking some objects, etc. He uses the left hand for shooting down a target.

SAM can be controlled by human master from round the world with the fulfillment of certain basic conditions. The main intention in the future works on SAM will be to develop an andro humanoid robot which will work in harmony with the human master.

Scientists of Tomorrow

Hindustan Innovation Factory an arm of Hindustan University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Department conducted an “in-camera” session on the innovations leading to societal benefits. The department, since its inception has been striving hard to bring out the best of talent, creativity and entrepreneurial skills of graduating students in mentoring them as “ SCIENTISTS OF TOMORROW “.

The exploration through research and scientific application has been the main academic pursuit the departments of Aero, Auto, ECE, EIE, Mech, MCA and IT under the guidance and supervision of highly qualified and most valued members of faculty. Hindustan University is putting in significant efforts to bring forth these innovations in channelizing them to the societal benefit.

In the introductory speech the Registrar emphasized that all innovations should either benefit society or industry. In an address by the Special Invitee, Mr. Dhorai Thodla mentioned idea is the child of innovation and that leads to a greater society by practical application. As a Mentor and Guide for many in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship, Mr. Dhorai said he always insists on resourcing for the materialization of the ideas with effective execution.

The Hindustan innovation factory is a platform for innovative ideas and creations. It focuses on helping up-coming inventors, idea generations, entrepreneurship and green technologies. The Hindustan innovation factory promotes entrepreneurship and student startups on campus. The e-cell as a part of the NEN on campus with the Hindustan innovation Factory gives students the guidance and mentor to help upcoming starters.

The Innovation factory conducted the press conference regarding the innovations by students from different departments. There was a session consisting of presentations which focused on the varied innovations brought out through the factory. Significant among them were a project on Robotics which is India’s first Andro humanoid Robot with 32 degrees of freedom. In another project group of final year UG students from Aero made a Solar Powered Glider which is significant in the current contest of rising fuel prices and power shortages. A final year student from the Department of MCA presented on Internet Security using Steganography attached to http protocol. The break-through innovation was a Three Wheeler Auto for Physically Challenged which was highly appreciated for the scope of livelihood to many who really need to get such support. A group of automobile students gave presentation on the developed ATV (All Terrain Vehicles) which was on the lines of BAJA, USA. Students from final year of UG & PG presented on the occasion.

Also present on the occasion were Ms. Vishnu Priya, Head – NEN, Chennai, Dr. K. Sarukesi, Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Pon Ramalingam, Registrar, Mr. Bruce D. Miller, Entrepreneurship Head and Mr. Venu Menon, Head – Innovation and Dy Director.
