STiAE Report


Two students Mr. BRITTO PAUL LOUIS and Mr. C. MUKUND from the Department of Automobile Engineering were sent to Germany to attend the training program.  The training program started on July 2, 2012 and will continue till July 20, 2012. The program is being conducted by Steinbeis Transfer centre for Automotive Engineering Esslingen, at Esslingen University, Stuttgart, Germany.
 
The course includes the following topics:
  • Vehicle technology.
  • Power electronics and electric drives.
  • Advanced internal combustion engine system.
  • Transmission control.
  • Automatic transmission and hybrid transmission.
  • Fuel cell and other alternative car concepts.
  • Why car structures fail?
  • Two excursions days.
  • Finally two examinations for the students.
The students have contacted the department and the faculty over phone and informed about the training and further information will be given after the students come back from Germany.

Think different For Differently Able

Hindustan University Designs an Auto Exclusively For Differently Able Persons


It is obvious and beyond doubt that globalization and the new economic policy have made tremendous inroads and ultimately changed the face of the Indian economy. Newer and newer products are being introduced day in and day out both customary and in tune with the end users’ choice as well.


Chennai, already branded as the ‘Detroit of India’ with numerous multinational auto giants has now yet another innovation to feel proud by adding a diamond to the already stunning golden crown. Yes. The renowned Hindustan University that already boasts of several firsts to its credit has now come to the rescue of differently able persons with its new innovation.

The designing of an auto rickshaw exclusively for the differently able persons is the brain child of Mr Kamala Kannan, Assistant Professor at Hindustan University. We have with us here Mr Kamala Kannan to speak more about his product and what prompted him for such a novel creation.

‘I am a disabled man having lost both my legs. How do you address me as differently able when I am crippled without legs?’ The question stirred ripples in me and I kept on asking myself as to how to make him feel good that he too is definitely a differently able person. ‘Necessity is the basis of invention’ goes the famous adage. And this was how an idea to innovate an auto exclusively for differently able person was born’ says Mr Kamala Kannan.

‘My department head Prof Subramanian’s guidance and support extended by college administration enthused me a lot in this innovation. I am grateful to them but for which this product would not have seen the light of the day. The auto driver’s original seat was removed and a small wheel chair was installed in its place. A ‘Joy stick’ was introduced to control the wheel chair’s operation.

A small lift fitted with BMTC electric motor was also placed to effectively move the wheel chair in and out of the driver’s cabin. The lift has been designed in such a way to withstand up to 400 kg weight. The battery once charged can activate the lift to and fro for 40 times without any interruption. In conventional autos the accelerator and clutch will be operated by hands and the brake by legs. The specialty of our innovation is that the accelerator, brake and clutch can all be operated by hands alone, which is a boon for the lame who have lost both their legs’ adds Mr Kamala Kannan.
I wish differentially able persons should make use of this golden opportunity and get in touch with the authorities concerned to get their recommendation certificates for obtaining driving licenses’ continues Mr Kamala Kannan.

Though the design may appear to be quite easy it took nearly a year for me to complete the design.

All India Council for Technical Education sanctioned Rs. 6 lacs from their funds and encouraged me in my innovation and designing activities for which I am grateful to them. The test drive of my newly designed auto was conducted from Kelambakkam where our college is located to Porur, a route that is prone to heavy traffic.

A differentially able person was engaged to test drive my auto. He was fully convinced and replied the performance of my auto as ‘Super’ in a single word. This single word speaks volumes and stands a testimony to my credentials. But he had only one problem. Entering and exit passage was quite narrow and wished that it be enlarged. But the problem is not with the auto but the total designing of the auto itself. Only a diesel run auto will have 24” space for free mobility but a petrol driven auto will obviously have a narrow entrance. Since government does not permit diesel driven autos in metros including Chennai my option was remote. I had to choose only a petrol driven auto for my designing purpose. My sincere request now to the government authorities is to permit autos to run on diesel that will be enable the differently able persons also to drive my newly designed autos’ concludes Mr Kamala Kannan.

This project selected as one of the Best New Innovative Project by Birla Industrial and Technological Museum (BITM) functioning under National Council of Science Museums , Ministry of culture ,Govt of India and won Second Prize with a cash award of Rs 15000/- at the INNOVATION HUB INFOCOM 2011 – 12 Exhibition, Kolkata during 8th to 11th December,2011.


WALL CLIMBING ROBOT
Wall Climbing Robot works with SUCTION principle with four legged SUCTION CUPS.

The movement is enabled with VACUUM GENERATOR, PNEUMATIC PISTON ASSEMBLY and PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER.

The robots mainly consist of three parts: A vacuum pump, a suction mechanism and a driving mechanism. Basic conditions that the robots can adhere to and move reliably on a vertical surface are first established, then the suction cups with a rigidity formula for the vertical movement is obtained.

We have created a robot that can run up a wall as smooth as glass and onto the ceiling at a rate of six centimeters a second.

In addition the robot uses a high definition wireless camera to send images of the inspected element.

1. Cleaning of High-rise buildings
2. Inspection of cylindrical steel Nuclear Storage Tanks.

Inspired by his father : Young Pradip Chandren from Tamil Nadu, An IPS officer in the making

I was born in Tiruvanamalai district of Tamil Nadu. My father, M Jeychandren, who hails from a humble family from a hamlet near Thanjavur, toiled against the odds and cleared the Civil Services examination. My mother Chitra is a housewife. I was raised in Chennai in a middle class family.
After completing my 12th standard, I was lucky to get into a premier institution – Hindustan College of Engineering and that too in the course of my choice- Mechanical Engineering. My time in Hindustan’s sprawling campus has left an indelible impression in my life. It was here that I learnt life’s most valuable lessons, faced my very first challenges, and found my lifelong buddies. Four years rolled on, and when I passed out in 2006, I was ready to face the world, ready to toil and succeed. Right out of college I had set my goal in aiming for the top civil services of the country. My father, who was an IRAS officer, has been my primary inspiration. Having grown up seeing my father and his colleagues living the bureaucratic life, I was determined to make it into the very same elite club. Though I was successful in my very first attempt and appeared for the final interview I had missed the final tally by a whisker. My parents and my younger sister Divya were a constant source of support and they encouraged me to never give up on my dreams. With unrelenting efforts, support from family and encouragement from my friends, I have been  successful in making it to IAS/IPS in the 2011 edition of the Civil Services examination. Tomorrow, when I embark on my Civil Service career after my ensuing training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Academy, Mussorie, I shall definitely carry the fond memories of my Hindustan days, knowledge and wisdom imparted to me by my professors and cherish them forever.

ABSTRACT:
HTTP does not secure its requests and responses. Using Man-in-the-Middle attack, it is possible to alter the HTTP communication, while it still would look authentic. This can be a problem, if you download data such as PGP key, TOR client, access banking services on-line, or when there is an interest to filter what you can read on the Internet. It should be noted that under particular circumstances, it is possible to attack HTTPS secured communication successfully. This paper proposes a steganography scheme that can be used to provide security at the Network Layer.

Design and Development of Three Wheeler For Physically Challenged

ABSTRACT
The project was taken up having the differently able (disability with legs) in mind–such a person can use this three-wheeler to make a living. The idea revolves around the concept of modifying the driver’s cabin of the auto rickshaw to accommodate a wheel chair, which can be held in place providing the comfort and the necessary safety to the driver. The controls are tailor made to make the fully operable by hands alone. Some of the specialized modification include incorporating a continuously varying transmission which relives the driver from the pain of constant gear shifting enabling him to do more with his hands, the brake is modified to be operated by hand in place of the clutch, a flip type door is employed for easy ingress and egress from the vehicle and a locking mechanism is provided for the wheel chair to enable utmost safety. The body of the standard vehicle are modified to have all such amenities- the dashboard, cabin floor region are fabricated specially for use in this vehicle.

The project taken up with all its features will be of great help to the differently able to live the independent lifestyle just like anybody else.

Design and Development Of All Terrain Vehicle (ATV)

ABSTRACT

This project is concerned with the design and fabrication of All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) as per BAJA SAEINDIA standards. Using CATIA V5, the model is created, which is fulfilling the guidelines of BAJA SAEINDIA rules. Infront SLA wishbone and rear McPherson Strut are fixed. The virtual model of ATV was converted into real time. A flange coupling was designed, modeled and fabricated to couple the gear box with the engine. The additional safety future of the vehicle is provision of transmitter and receiver that allows communication with team members on the track. The additional future of the vehicle is the insulation of the exhaust to retain the temperature with the exhaust system that is increases the overall efficiency of the engine. The weight of the vehicle is kept for a minimum of 280kg. This project won Rs. 40,000/- cash award in the BAJA SAEINDIA competition in less weight and sustainable category.
