Global Leadership and POSCO Innovation

The School of International Affairs, Hindustan University organized a Guest Lecture on 23rd November 2011. The lecture was attended by the students of MBA and EIBIS course of Hindustan University.

The programme commenced with a prayer song. The Guests and the students were accorded a warm welcome. Ms. Akkara Sherine, Academic Co-ordinator of the English Language, Indian Business for International Students (EIBIS) Course introduced the Chief Guest, Mr. Song Byeong Kwan, Director, POSCO, Chennai. Ms. Sukhee Lee of Indo Korea Cultural and Information Centre was instrumental in arranging the Guest Lecture for the students. Mr. Bruce, Dean International Affairs, Mr. Venu Menon, Deputy Director Placement, Dr. Ramnath, Director, Management Studies and staff members of MBA and EIBIS Course were present on the occasion.

Mr. Song Byeong Kwan, Director, POSCO gave a lecture titled “Global Leadership and POSCO Innovation”. His lecture was divided into two sessions and it was interspersed with creative video presentations. He commenced his lecture with interesting facts regarding the similarity of Korean and Tamil languages. Inge vaa (Tamil) and Ile va (Korean) means the same in English “Come here”. In his lecture he emphasized the importance of culture and he stated that deep understanding of other culture is the only way to know the country as a whole. He emphasized that the key to Global Leadership is constant moving. He mentioned that human beings must learn a lot from animals too, how to confront the environment and how to move on in life. He also added that we must learn from history and learn from leading companies to excel. He elaborated on the fact that to move on in life aim for perfection, face challenges and concentrate to work as a team. Life is about overcoming the previous habit and giving way to new habits. He stated “Endurance is Achievement”. One should have passion in the work and have the feel “Me and We” are one and work as a team, move in Groups with experienced leaders. Move towards vision and target. He explained that the resources may be limited but creativity is unlimited.

There was an excellent video presentation that highlighted the growth of POSCO , the world’s largest steel company which started in 1973 at Korea achieved the unique status as the Top 3 steel firm with 8 hubs , 80 subsidiaries and 80 sales network. In India POSCO has established its firms in Delhi, Maharashtra, Orissa and Chennai. Mr. Son Byeong Kwan highlighted on the fact that POSCO’s history is the history of creativity and thus it has achieved its current status and it moves on to achieve greater heights as a family with a vision to excel. He concluded the lecture stating that to excel in all fields one should get a good insight of the world and confront the environment do the best and not to miss out on anything.
