A seminar on Emerging Trends in Hospitality Management

As part of the Silver Jubilee Celebrations, the School of Management conducted a seminar on “Emerging Trends in Hospitality Management” on 22nd October 2011. Mr. P. Ramnath, Director, MBA, accorded a warm welcome to the Chief Guest and other distinguished guests. Dr. K. Sarukesi, Vice-Chancellor highlighted in his speech the importance of hospitality industry. Mr. Roger Brantsma, General Manager, Hilton, Chennai was the Chief Guest. In his address he gave basic tips to survive in the hospitality industry. He also spoke about the “brand loyalty”. He mentioned that “If you want to achieve certain things in this field you will have to stick to a brand”. In his Presidential Address, Dr. S. Bakthavatchalam, Joint Director, Tourism Department mentioned that an average GDP through tourism for a country is 10.6 to 11 percent and India hardly has 6 percent. He considered tourism and hospitality as the two eyes and concluded that “the sky is not the limit in tourism”.

Mr. Dhananjay Kumar , F&B Manager, Hilton, Chennai, spoke on the best practices in hotels. He mentioned that to have a very good organization we require organizational culture, core values and best practices. Three HR professionals namely, Col. K. C. Menon, Manager HR, ITC Grand Chola, Chennai; Mr. Padma Prasad, Manager, Learning and Development, Radisson , Blue Resorts ,Temple Bay, Mahabalipuram and Mr. Kamlesh Trivedi, Manager, Learning and Development, Vivanta –Fisherman’s Cove, Chennai spoke about the organization and their visions.

Mr. Manish Dayya, General Manager of Rain Tree Hotels, Chennai and Mr. Raghu Lanka, Director, National Sales and Marketing of Park Hotel, Chennai spoke about the differences between sales and marketing. They stated that marketing has a major role to play in hospitality industry and that they must keep up with the changing trends of the society.

Mr. Leo. J. Fernando,Director Operations, Asiana Hotel, Chennai, in his Valedictory Speech said that hospitality is a very good job generating industry and has the ability to provide jobs to around 50 million people.
