Anti- Ragging Campaign 2011 at HITS

The Anti-Ragging Campaign 2011 began at 9.30 a. m on 11th August 2011 at Hindustan University with a prayer. Dr. K .Sarukesi, Vice-Chancellor, HITS welcomed the Chief Guest Dr. C. Sylendra Babu I.P.S , Inspector General of Police, North Zone, Tamil Nadu and also the entire Hindustan fraternity. He also welcomed the students of neighbouring institutions who arrived to participate in the Campaign against ragging.

Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor , HITS in her Presidential Address started with a query to the senior students , “How will you receive your juniors?”. She advised the students that , “Ragging is an easy prescription for trouble”. She also added that the first lesson to be learnt is how to treat your fellow beings. She was very firm in stating that every student should respect each other and the institution should continue to remain as ragging free campus. She concluded her address stating that students should concentrate on their goals and achieve laurels in their fields and not indulge in ragging and other acts.

Prof. C. Robin , Legal Advisor, HGI and District Governor, Madras District, Y’s Men International was the Guest of Honour. In his address he said , “ Ragging is a colonial phenomenon and is a menace” UN has viewed ragging as a human rights violation. The Government has taken several legal measures to curb ragging. He informed that law alone is not enough to curb this menace. He spoke from the view point of Legal Advisor and also as a Y’s Men. He informed that Y’s Men International aims to develop the minds of the youngsters. He advised that the youth should involve in various social activities and organize programmes in the institution and involve in focusing their energy towards healthy activities that would promote their holistic development.

Dr. C. Sylendra Babu, was the Chief Guest during the Anti-Ragging Campaign 2011 at Hindustan University addressed the students with enthusiasm. He informed that he was extremely happy to be present for the Anti –Ragging Campaign 2011 and he applauded the institution for taking the initiative and he also mentioned that Hindustan University is the first institution to conduct an Anti-Ragging Campaign as an initiative to curb ragging. He informed the students that he had only one message to the students“ You’re fortunate”. He meant that the students are fortunate to be in a reputed engineering institution and there are many who don’t get an opportunity to enter the portals of good engineering institution. He advised the students to have positive attitude and have larger ambitions in life. His prime advise was to utilise the time as it is precious he also explained that one hour can be equated to one crore. He also gave a lecture through a power point presentation on the meaning of ragging and also gave a brief account of the laws constituted to prohibit ragging in the state. He ended his speech motivating the students to concentrate on education. He said , “Make full use of your education and develop the required skills and knowledge and have a positive outlook in life”.

Mementos were presented to Dr. C. Sylendra Babu IPS, Pro. C. Robin, Legal Advisor and Mr. Jesse Boyd, Director, Athletes in Action, USA.

Mr. Jesse Boyd introduced his team of 11 coaches who are imparting rigorous coaching in basketball , football, hockey, tennis and athletics to the university students.

Prizes were distributed by the Chief Guest, Dr. C. Sylendra Babu to the winners of various competitions as part of the Anti-Ragging Campaign 2011. Essay and slogan writing competitions based on the theme evils of ragging were conducted.

Anti-Ragging pledge was read out in unison by the students with a vow to root out ragging.

The Programme ended with the Vote of Thanks by Dr. A. Joseph Stanley, Director Academics.

It was followed by a Anti-Campaign Rally that was flagged off by Dr. C. Sylendra Babu, I. P. S. Inspector General of Police, North Chennai. The rally witnessed the participation of the staff and students of the Hindustan Group of Institutions and neigbouring engineering. The participants were sporting a well designed T-Shirt with the letters printed Say No To Ragging. The staff and students were vociferous during the rally voicing the evils of ragging.
